Area Teachers
From the Shelbina Democrat, Wednesday, August 17, 1892, giving us a list of the area schools and their teachers:
Note: Monroe County teachers are highlighted in blue.
Mrs. May Lightner will stay in Clarence and deal with the kids there. Miss Mollie Sheets will rule the roost at the Hale school house.
Miss Kate Herron will also help tame the wild youths who attend Clarence graded school.
W.S. Orr will hold forth in Hunnewell, and in his commands there will be no "or" or alternative.
Miss Annie Spalding will have charge of the Intermediate department of the Hunnewell school and will be in continual Orr of her superior.
R.G. Maupin will manage the Fairview, Monroe county, school, and it will always be right fair to view.
D.G. Gray will control the Mercer school, but he will have little mercy on those who refuse to learn.
L.N. Wood, should and could, will boss the Kendall school, and could and should make a success as a teacher.
R.E. Daniels is booked for 4 months at Lilly Dale, district no. 3. "Oh! come where the lillies bloom."
Solomon Benton will dispense wisdom at Maud.
And T.S. Wheeler will wheel learning into the Lentner children.
Miss May Starn will storm among the little shavers in the primary at Bethel. Miss Lizzie Jackson of Shelbina will teach the young idea at the Ridge school house.
Miss Nora E. Garnett will shove them along at the Shofstail school, dist. No 4.
Miss Minnie Evans will guide the seekers after knowledge at the Gooch school house.
John D. Robey will shake up the ideas of the Lakenan boys and girls.
J.P. Gillispe is booked for Leonard where the public school has the benefit of the rivalry of an academy.
T.A. Bailey took his training in our institute, but goes away to Santa Fe, Monroe county, for practice.
I.W. Noel knows how to run the Taylor school, and he will do it.
I.N. Bailey will fill the bill at Oak Hill, Monroe county.
A. C. Staggs will run the Applegate school without a stagger.
W. D. Mc Murray tackles the Bragg school, and the patrons will brag of their school.
R. A. Cleek will let his bright ideas shine in the Nesbit school.
John J. Holmes will help manage the boys at Shelbyville, & may he at home.
Miss Ollie Bowman will honor her position in the Clarence public school.
H. Davis will shell the woods at the Shale school.
Miss Bernie Jones is still seeking a field of usefulness.
Miss Effie Gooch will point out to the wee ones in the Shelbyville school A B C etc.
For four months C.A. Matterson will with his usual enterprise control the school at Interprise.
As intelligence is the mainstay of liberty so Cole Davis will for six months work in this cause in Liberty district no. 1.
J.L. Gwynn will also for 6 months use the rod in the Robinson school.
At Valley Grove R.A. Humphrey for 5 months will guide the youth in wisdom path and to the groves of knowledge.
L.W. Doyle at Stalcup school house (no longer a voting precinct) will awaken the young ideas.
W.A. Farr at the Givan school house will manage the boys and girls.
Miss Lena Butler of Shelbina has not located her butlership.
Miss Ella Lister expects to list the Hornback boys and girls.
Miss Callie McGlassen in Hunnewell will help Orr.
Miss Ora L. Lightner will enlighten ignorance among the children of the Chinn school.
Miss Mary Todd is one of the prophets that has honor in her own county. She will teach in Shelbyville school.
At Hickory Grove in Macon county Miss Louise Bowman will use the hickory.
Miss Emma Cary will dwell in Pleasant Valley during school days.
O.P. Sturm will take the Eaton school by storm.
Miss Rachel Howell will run the Graham school for 7 months and board at home. Miss Anna McMurry will for 8 months train the idea to shoot at Mt. Olive school.
At Prairie View, a pleasant place, Miss Lizzie Allison will be queen of the school.
The Bishop school will be run by a layman, W.M. Furnish, who will furnish the required brains.
Amos Brownell for 6 months will try to make more real men and women too at the Moreman school.
The Drennen school will be controlled by A.E. Baker.
Miss Mattie Sheets will hold sway at Freeman school house.
While Miss Georgie Sheets will for 5 months instruct the little Hagers Groveites.
For 6 months the Weeden school will know Miss Carrie Lydick.
W.L. Peoples will chuck up the Chick school.
L.F. Farr, not far from home, will teach the three R's & more too at the Sha-- school.
Rookwood will learn from W.F. McCready, always ready.
Fairview will view with favor J.W. Vandiver.
W.L. Poor will hold in check the fast bricks in the Brick school house near Elgin.
For nine months Emden's little chaps will knuckle, if not kneel, to Miss Bettie McNeil.
Harriet Holder will hold the fort for 5 months at the Martin school.
J.W. Schwady will hold sway for 5 months in district no. 2 or 7 (where?)
Stringtown has strung W.B. Brewingtyn to brew its school.
Miss Mary E. Weedon for 6 months will weed out ignorance in the J.D. Parsons school.
Miss Minnie Patterson will use the birch or ferule in room No. 4 at Shelbina. While Miss Gertrude Blodgett will administer discipline to those in a room below - no. 2.
And Miss Alice Grant will stand in 3 between the two.
Miss Kate Cooper will manage the lisping ones and have her hands and big heart full in No. 1.
Miss Mabel Cooper and E.R. Edwards will draw from the well of English undefiled (we hope.) in the grammar school.
