The book was entitled, "The Story of the Guard : A Chronicle of the War" The Regiment was General "Fremont's Body Guard", an elite and highly trained group of fighting men. General Fremont postponed the burial of these men until his arrival
on Oct.28th, so that he could personally attend. They were buried with
full military honors, in front of the Courthouse in the Public Square in
the center of Springfield with many in attendance, many soldiers in tears.
They were buried 800 yards away in what became known as the "old city cemetery",
with wooden markers identifying their graves. Six years later, when the
National Cemetery was created at Springfield, the wooden markers had deteriorated
beyond recognition, and these members of General Fremont's Body Guard were
then removed from the old city cemetery, and buried in "unknown" graves
in the National Cemetery. Their markers simply read, "Unknown soldier -
General Fremont's Body Guard". May their souls rest in peace, Amen.

John S. POINDEXTER was born in 1839 in
Illinois, the second son of Ambrose B. Poindexter. When he was a
boy, his family moved to Missouri, first to Carroll and finally Lawrence
Co., where his father was a minister and Justice of the Peace. When he
was 23, John joined the the Union Army on 16 Mar 1862 at Springfield, IL.
He mustered in as a First Sergeant into C Company, 14th Regt. Missouri
State Militia Cavalry, Captain Hargrove commanding. The 14th MSM
Cavalry saw action at Neosho on May 31, 1862, a skirmish August 8-9, the
Battle of Prairie Grove, Ark. on December 7, and various expeditions until
the Operations against Marmaduke in Missouri, from December 31, 1862 to
January 15, 1863. They were at Fort Lawrence, Beaver Station, January 6,
1863 and took part in the defence of Springfield January 8. In early 1863,
the 14th MSM Cavalry was disbanded, and John transferred with his comrades
into the 4th MSM Cavalry on 4 February 1863. There he is found as a Private,
so evidently his previous rank did not follow him. This was also
a veteran unit, originally organized at St. Joseph, Mo. in early 1862,
and also present at Springfield. At the time of this transfer, the
4th MSM Cav. was in service in Central MO, duties including guarding the
Missouri Pacific Railroad. However, at almost the same time, John's father
died. Subsequent records find him listed as, "Absent in confinement
at St. Louis (since?) 30 April 1863 by sentence of Gen. Court Martial for
desertion, confined for six months." A strong possibility is that
the Union army wasn't granting hardship leave, so John simply took his
own, to make sure that his family was all right. He returned to duty after
his sentence was served, and remained with the 4th MSM Cavalry for some
six months thereafter, until the war was almost at an end. John mustered
out scant weeks before the war ended, on 16 or 18 March 1865, at Warrensburg,
MO. This former soldier lived a peaceful life as a farmer until his death
on 19 May 1922. He is buried at Ash Grove, in Greene Co. Missouri. Submitted

William Martin Allen, my great-grandfather is buried in Oklahoma. The three of them all served in the Eighteenth Missouri Volunteer Infantry Regiment. John and William were at Shiloh where William suffered three wounds. Actually John was in worse shape, suffering from "consumption" at the time. Shortly after the battle he was shipped an Army hospital in St. Louis. He could not be cured and his family took him home to Grundy county where he died. He was nineteen years of age. While William was recouping from his Shiloh wounds he was nursed by his future bride, Urilder Mariah McGuinn, a Tennessee girl. William served with General Sherman through Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina. After he was again wounded he was assigned to the Ambulance Corps as a blacksmith, a profession he followed the rest of this life. James was one of the many popularly elected militia officers who were demoted by the governor. As a reenlisted corporal he served with William during the siege of Atlanta and later battles. These folks and many others from north central Missouri are described in Leslie Anders' excellent book, The Eighteenth Missouri. It reads like a novel. My Great-great-grandfather, Yours truly, William Dale Allen
James Hughs, Buried in Cat Creek Cemetery A Brimson, Missouri resident, enlisted in the 1st Regiment Calvalry, M.S.M., Company K, as a Sergeant on May 28, 1862 at Edinburg, Missouri. He was 41 years old. Within months he contracted a disease and was sent home. He died December 30, 1862. He left behind a 36 year old widow, Ibeliza, with seven young children. His wife died April 30, 1865, perhaps of a broken heart. My gr gr grandfather Peggy Forbes
John W. Hughs, Buried in Coon Creek Cemetery James' son, was sent in as a replacement. John also mustered into the 1st Regiment Calvalry, M.S.M., Company K, as a Private, on October 2, 1862. His military papers show him as 18; however, his birth date of January 11, 1847, would have made him 16. James' horse was shot and killed during a battle and the Army reimbursed him $100 for his loss. James died on April 26, 1895, at age 48. My gr grandfather Peggy Forbes

WILLIAM N. ROBERTSONis my great grandfather. He was a Union soldier born in Breckinridge, Kentucky He moved to Missouri with this parents when they settled in Genty County, Missouri but later moved to Grundy County and worked a farm until the war broke out. He enlisted in the Union Army at St Joseph, Missouri on August 18, 1862 at the age of 23 years. He served in the 35th Regiment, Company F, of the Missouri Infantry and was discharged from the service June 28, 1865 at Little Rock, Arkansas by reason of expiration of term of service under provision of the War Department. He served under Capt Benjamin P. Hollands. After the war, he returned to Grundy County where he married Minervia Francis McCammon, daughter of Reverend William and Rosannah Oxford McCammon. He went into partnership with his father-in-law in general farming and stock raising. This partnership was dissolved in 1880 when the father-in-law retired. William and Minervia continued to live at the old homestead, which was given to her by her father, until March 1903 when they moved to Kingfisher County, Oklahoma. They returned to Grundy County, Missouri a short time before his death. Both William and Minervia are buried in the church yard cemetery of the Union Baptist Church, known as Coon Creek Cemetery, in Grundy County, Missouri Roger Robertson
