BOOKOUT, Eli died September 30,

J. Hanson
John I Scobee Jr. was born Feb. 14th 1809
in Kentucky, probably Clark Co. In 1830 he lived in Ralls Co.,
MO., probably the town of Paris, MO, and on January 18, 1862, he joined
for duty and enrolled in the Union Army at Shibleys Point, MO. He was mustered
in on the 5th of February, 1862 at Macon City, MO, the organization being
Capt. York's Mounted Rifle Co., Mo. State Militia. This organization
subsequently became Co. B. 11th. Reg. Mo. State Militia Cavalry. He was
appointed 1st. Lieut. 18 of Jan., day of enrollment, by Willard P. Hall,
acting Gov. of the State of Mo. on the basis of integrity, patriotism and
ability. He was 53 years old. About 1st of July, 1862, his company, under
the command of Major (afterward Col.) Rogers, engaged in the Skirmish at
Downing. This place is located on the Keokuk and Western Railway
in Schuyler Co., and near the Eastern line thereof. It was called "Cherry
Grove", and the fight was known as "The skirmish at "Cherry Grove".
The engagement took place between the 2nd. Bn. of the 11th Mo. State Militia
(Cavalry) and a portion of Col. Joe Porter's Confederate troops.
In this engagement, the latter was defeated with a loss of 4 men killed.
The Federals lost one man--Capt. York of Co. B. 11th. Mo. State Militia,
who was mortally wounded and died a few days thereafter at Memphis, in
Scotland Co., MO. It was on that day that Lieut. John Scobee suffered
a gunshot wound in his left wrist and his horse reportedly had his ears
shot off. It is possible that John Scobee received a battlefield
commission at the death of Capt. York, as he has been known as Capt. Scobee,
however it was never official. According to Company muster roll, he was
present from enrollment till April 30, 1862, on detached service May and
June, and July, August and Sept., he was in the hospital at Macon City.
He was mustered out at Palmyra, Mo., Oct. 1, 1862. After his return from
the service he owned and operated a livery stable. He was a member
of the Masons. He died on the 21st day of Nov. 1896 in Adair Co., MO, and
is buried at the Morlock Cemetery--age 87 years-9 months-7 days.
The following person is his son...The discharge papers of my gggrandfather
says... James S. Scobee, a private of Capt.
Richard A. Phelans, Company L 13th Regiment of Missouri cavalry volunteers,
enrolled on the 8th day of Sept. 1864, to serve 3 years or during the war
and is hereby discharged from the service of the United States this 13th
day of May, 1866, at Fort Leavenworth, KS. Joanne

The following information is taken from an obituary for Franklin Taylor
and has been verified through Military and Pension records, as well
as
first-person interviews with his granddaughter, Vera Taylor Post.
"Franklin Taylor, son of John William
and Marian Taylor, was born in Hamilton County, Ohio, March 10, 1842 and
departed this life April 18th, 1928...He was left an orphan among strangers
at the tender age of six years when his mother died in 1848 when the cholera
swept Cooper County, Missouri, for his father died in 1842 a few weeks
before Franklin was born. Then his mother took him with her back
to Hopkinsville, Kentucky in 1843. There they went with an uncle
to Cooper County, Missouri in 1845, where his mother died in 1848.
He then went to Iowa, living there until 1858 when he went to Savannah,
Missouri. There he enlisted when the war broke out in 1861 in Co.
B. 25th Missouri Cavalry, Aug. 28, 1861. He was captured at the battle
of Lexington, MO...On Nov. 1, 1861 he reenlisted as a private in Co. K
50th Illinois Infantry and served until the close of the war. Then
he returned to Missouri and was united in marriage to Miss Sarah Agnes
Jenkins Feb. 8, 1866. To this union
were born 5 children: Forester Mercer, Charles Samuel, John Edward,
Levi Franklin and a daughter who died in infancy.
Franklin brought his family to Kansas in 1885 and settled in Osborne County,
Kansas and lived on a farm until 1909 when he moved to the town of Luray,
Kansas...Burial was conducted in the Grand Center Cemetery. Burial
service was jointly in charge of the Luray Legion Boys and the Masonic
Order." Please let me know if you have any questions or if anyone may have
some more information about the uncle who settled in
Cooper County, Missouri. Joanne
