William Jenkins Davis: 1.
William Jenkins1 Davis, son of Uriah (Hugh) Davis and Jane (Jensie?) White,
was born in Weakley Co., TN 2 Sep 1828, and migrated to Stoddard County,
MO, with most of his brothers about 1843. He married first Clarrisa
White in Stoddard County c. 1847. Clarrisa was born in Tennessee
c.1832. Clarrisa died c. and he married Nancy Gaines about 1858.
Nancy was born in Weakley Co., TN 17 Dec 1825. Nancy was the daughter
of Francis Gaines and Charlotte Satterfield. She married Thomas Jefferson
White. Nancy died 21 Feb 1902 at 76 years of age. Her body was interred
in Fairview Cem., Mt. Grove, MO. Billie left Stoddard Co. for Randolph
Co., AR apparently at the outbreak of the Civil War. Family legend reports
he served with the 8th Cavalry, MO State Guard (CSA), and that he was at
the Battles of Pilot Knob, Wilson's Creek and Hartville. His obituary
indicates he served with Freeman's Arkansas Volunteers, which was actually
a MO contingent. No compiled service record has been located, but
perhaps he served with Freeman as a partisan ranger during 1862-1864, when
record-keeping was practically non-existant. Freeman reorganized his unit
as Freeman's Missouri Cavalry Regiment, which participated under General
Marmaduke during Price's invasion of Missouri in the fall of 1864.
Billie was a Mason and in 1884 assisted in formation of a new lodge in
Mountain Grove. He died 24 Oct 1908 in Wright Co., MO, at 80 years
of age, and is probably buried in Fairview Cemetery. He currently
has no tombstone, but a footstone with his initials is located next to
Nancy's marked grave. ChuckD
My great grandfather, Clinton Young, born 02-21-1841, died 02-11-1919,
buried Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Wright County, served in the Union Army
from 1861 to Feb. 1865. He was a Private in John Rogers Company,
6th Regiment of the Kansas Cavalry Volunteers. My great grandfather,
Joel
W. Young Midland, Texas
Thomas WYNNE b. 1829, Marion Co, Tennessee,
d. 1898, Cleveland Co, Oklahoma Thomas served as Private and 2nd Sergeant
in Company A, 34th Tennessee Infantry (also known as 4th Confederate Regiment
Tennessee Infantry.) This Company was successively designated as Capt Bostick's
Co., Col Churchwell's Regt TN Volunteers. Cos H and A, 4th Conf Regt Tn
Inf. and Co A, 34 th Regt TN Inf. The regiment was organized 5 Aug
1861 and re-organized April 1862. It was designated the 34th Regt TN Inf
by the Confederate War Dept., but was known in the field as the 4th Conf.
Regt TN Inf and as Churchwell's Regt TN Volunteers. Thomas enlisted 4 Feb
1862 (also shown as Aug 15 and 19, 1861). He was shown on the Muster Rolls
at Knoxville, TN Aug 1861, at Cumberland Gap May-Aug 1862 and at Bridgeport,
AL 1863 and 1864. He was captured 3 Mar 1964, Walker Co., Georgia by forces
under Maj Gen Thomas, commanding Dept of the Cumberland, and
forwarded to Capt. S. E. Jones, Pro. Mar. Gen., Louisville, KY. He
was shown as POW at Military Prison, Louisville, KY 4 Mar 1864 and received
at Camp Chase, Ohio, 11 Mar 1864 by order of Brig Gen Burbridge. Received
at Fort Delaware, DE on 17 Mar 1864. Paroled at Fort Delaware, Delaware
30 Oct 1864. Delivered at Venus Point, Savannah River, 15 Nov 1864 to W.
H. Hatch, Asst. Agt. of Exch. and Subscribed to oath of allegiance at Chattanooga,
TN 8 Mar 1865. He was shown on Civil War papers that his residence was
in Marion Co, TN. His complexion Fair; hair Dark; eyes Grey; height 5 ft
10 in. Indorsement shows: "Roll of Deserters from Rebel Army at Chattanooga
who have taken the Oath of Amnesty." ( All were listed as "deserters" who
took this oath.) Family stories tell of him returning home to Wright Co,
Missouri, emaciated. No one would give him any food or help along the way
home. What a trek that must have been! And then may not have been welcomed
back by others in community in MO because of sentiments after the War ended.
They later moved to Texas and then to Oklahoma. Thomas died there in 1898
and I believe he may be buried at Blackburn Cem. at Norman, OK. A lot from
this Wynne family is buried there. His wife Amanda Jane (BEAN) Wynne
applied for his pension there as his widow. Amanda's family in TN was
quite well off for the times, were farmers and slaveholders. She brought
her "Mammy" to Missouri with her and on the move to Texas after the War,
this mammy left her somewhere in Arkansas, saying "she didn't want to be
scalped by those "commanches"!
Another story about Amanda in Missouri while Thomas was off to the
War, her family had lost most of what they had and she only had this one
horse left. At one point, some Union soldiers visited her farm and they
tried
to take this horse. Amanda clung to the horse and as the soldier brought
it to his commanding officer, she hung on. The officer let her keep her
horse. During this visit, their son William Obadiah Wynne, my great-grandfather,
was only a small child, but told those soldiers, "Just wait until my papa
returns, he'll get you Yankees with his long knife!" (This story
has been passed down in our family). Another note on Thomas: His father
Obadiah Wynne b. 1811 in Marion Co, TN was killed by John C. Fremont's
soldiers in Missouri during the War. Not sure if he was in Confederate
Army or not, just that he was on his way to see his brother Anderson Wynne.
On the trip he ran into Capt Fremont. He ordered Obadiah to surrender his
rifle and he refused. Fremont shot and killed him. Fremont then buried
him in a grave so shallow his toes stuck out. His family went looking for
him and gave him a proper burial. What it must have been like for Thomas
to return home to find his father also killed. (One source says Fremont's
soldiers and another says Fremont himself killed him.) The WYNNE family
is also an old Colonial line originating from England. The BEAN family
was of Scotch-Irish descent, were first settlers of TN,
and were riflemen at King's Mountain in the Rev War. Grace

Cyrus Taylor Ward was born Feb 1842
in Va or Tenn and died in 1828 in Wright Co. Mo. He was the son of Duriah
J and Elizabeth Prater Ward. This family is listed in the 1850 Sullivan
Co. Tenn and 1860 Scott Co Va
Census. Cyrus joined the 14th Tenn Inf(Confederate) and on August 30,
1864 was captured in the battle of Petersburg and on Sept 6, along with
his brother Simon Peter Ward, was sent to Washington and was released per
order of Sec of War and sent back to Gov Johnson of Tenn for enlistment
on Oct 1 1864 in the Union Army, Card no 4743246 No 1580. Neither is listed
in Johnson's rooster so apparently they fled west because in 1900 Wright
Co Mo , we find Cyrus in the census. He apparently had been living in Ill
for a time because some of his
children was born in Ill. Simon Peter dies in a sawmill in Oliver's
Landing, Ark in 1873. He had a brother
William L Ward, killed in Battle of Cedar
Mountain in Culpepper Co. Va as reported by another brother
Stephen D Ward. According to family members
we found on the internet, Cyrus was supposed to have applied for a Union
Pension but was turned down, probably because he had beared arms against
the Union before his capture. He was supposed to have been wounded in the
war and always had to use a cane until his death. Family members
in California say he died in 1928 and is buried in Norwood, Wright Co.
Mo. They had visited his grave there. They also have a photo of him. His
wife Amanda (surnane unknown) is supposed to be buried in St Clair Co Mo.
Children are Mae born June 1881, Hattie, born June 1881, Florence born
Oct 1893, Sarah born 1899. Mack Holliday
