Lieut. Thomas S. Staples and Pvt. Lilliburn Mussetter, of Co. K, 69th. Regt. (Militia), were
killed by "bushwhackers," May 10, 1863, near Fairmont, Clark Co., Mo.
Mussetter was the father of 10 children. On May 26, 1863, at Fairmont, a court martial of
militia officers was held, and Samuel Dale and Aquilla Standiford were found guilty
of the two killings. Dale and Standiford were exectued May 26, 1863, at
Fairmont. The burial sites of these two soldiers does not seem to be known.
Perhaps they were buried nearby, in the area of Fairmont, or since Pvt. Mussetter was from
Lewis County, perhaps he was buried there. Mary Jo Sisson March
