The obituary for Philip
PHILIP PIERCE SHELMADINE
April 25, 1920 - February 3, 1987
Those who shared life with Phil Shelmadine were blessed to know a warm and engaging human being. Let us praise God for Phil's touch on our lives.
Phil was born and spent his childhood in Silver Creek, Nebraska. He was the third of five children born to Glenn and Esther Shelmadine. He entered Kearney State Teachers College, and graduated there, though his studies were interrupted when he enlisted in the US Navy in 1942. He served until 1945 as a pilot on the USS Attu in the Pacific. After teaching one year and operating a bottling plant for several years, Phil entered his principle career as a manufacturer's representative for auto parts and accessories. While still in Nebraska he also worked as a basketball referee for six seasons. He always remained a sports enthusiast and became an avid golfer.
Phil married Helen Keubler at Kearney on March 2, 1952. They shared the joys and challenges of life for almost 35 years. Helen Survives him as do his sisters Lucille, Ruth and Helen.
Family members say that Phil was apt at being Santa Claus at family Christmas gatherings. He was loyal to his friends, reliable and honest in business.
Phil was baptized in 1921 in the Methodist Epicsopal Church in Silver Creek. He has been an active member of St. Timothy since 1973 and has served us as Head Usher and Church Council member. He chaired the Chancel Remodeling Committee and was very active with the Funraisers.
Phil will be buried tomorrow at Mt. View Cemetery in Tacoma.
