Descendants of John Miles

Notes

9. John Miles

In records of the estate setlement of William Miles, John Miles was listed as a full brother but deceased. John's heirs were listed as John H., James H., Judith (now wife of Wm. Anderson) and William H. MILES.
It was further shown John H. Miles was also dec'd and his heirs were William T. (infant) and Henrietta (infant).

12. Judith Juda Miles

Edwards wife's name was unknown to Linda Hudgens, a researcher of the Hudgen family tree. When we found the children's names agreed with the names listed in the estate settlement for William Miles which listed Judith Hudgens children, it was concluded Judith Miles must have been his wife. The will settlement listed her children in 1847 because she was probably deceased. 1/24/94

Edward Hudgins

Linda Hudgens is a researcher working on Hudgens/Hudgins located in Nashville, TN. She has provided the information regarding Edward being the husband of Judith and his father James. They lived in Cumberland Co., VA and migrated to Robertson Co. TN.

14. Joseph Miles

This information was supplied by Mildred M. (Miles) Mountcastle, 201 Maplelawn Ave. N.E., Roanoke, VA 24012-2518. Mildred also found Isham's second wife Elizabeth had a maiden name of CARTER.
Joseph's family was listed in the Raney Collection volumes in the Virginia Room of the Roanoke, VA Public Library.

45. Julias Miles

The birthdate for Julias was provided by Sue Shank of St. Albans, WV.

Elizabeth A. Waggoner

The birthdate place for Elizabeth was provided by Sue Shank of St. Albans, WV.

47. Jane Miles

The birthdate for Jane was provided by Sue Shank of St. Albans, WV.

48. Lucy Miles

The birthdate for Lucy was provided by Sue Shank of St. Albans, WV.

15. Thomas J. Miles

Thomas is found in 1806 Cumberland Co. VA tax list.
Thomas left Bedford Co. VA about 1825-30 for Robertson Co. TN with his wife Elizabeth. Thomas sold some land in Bedford in 1829 using an attorney with his power of attourney while living in TN.

Elizabeth Hudgins

Elizabeth's maiden name is a guess because Thomas went to live in Robertson Co. TN next to Hudgins.

16. Susan Miles

Records for Susannah according to Jean Fitch Justice, 10025 Amsden Way, Eden Prairie, MN 55347
Jean indicated her correct name is Sarah Susannah Miles Hale and furnished other data. This is in contrast to the Bedford Co. VA marriage record where she is mentioned as Susannah and the 1845 document mentioning the names of the siblings of William Miles from Pulaski Co. KY where she is mentioned only as Susan.

17. Henry Miles

This information was supplied by Mildred M. (Miles) Mountcastle, 201 Maplelawn Ave. N.E., Roanoke, VA 24012-2518. Mildred also found Isham's second wife Elizabeth had a maiden name of CARTER. This seems confused with his father Isahm whose first wife was Judith Carter.
Henry and Mary MILES purchased the John Carter farm from Lawson Carter who was deeded the farm by John Carter because Lawson paid off his many debts.
In a search of census and property records, I found Henry had moved east several counties supposedly near to his children in later life. No details on where he died.

18. Armistead Johnson Miles

Armstead J. Miles was born in Franklin County, Virginia, and was a soldier of the War of 1812. Although but a boy in years he had the heart and spirit of a man and proved it by the enthusiasm he showed in the cause of his country on the field of battle. He was married to a native Virginian, and in 1830 moved his family to Kentucky and located in Pulaski County, near Somerset, the County Seat. In 1839 he moved to Macon County, Missouri and settled in the Lyda Township. Here they both lived the balance of their lives, and when they died were buried in a private burial ground on their homestead, three miles Northeast of Atlanta, Mo. (which has been found) The homestead was located 1 1/2 miles north of Economy, west 1/2 miles to the road north. Go north 2/10 mile to house on left side (west side) of the road. The existing buildings are in poor repair and may be gone when the reader visits the location. If the drive still exists you can walk to the grave site by keeping to the left and going thru a gate in the fence. Large fence posts once held a gate but not today. From the gate the graves are about 100 feet west and 100 yards south.
The ground is overgrown in thorn bushes and thorn trees making walking painful. A very large oak tree stood about 50 feet south of the graves in 1996.
There are several huge oak trees that were probably virgin timber never cut when the rest of the property was cleared after being purchased in 1840 or so. ******************************************************************************* The first name was spelled Armsted in the Miles family bible.
It is spelled Armistead in the MILES FAMILY TREE.
Armistead was probably named by his father for Isham's half brother named Armistead Brown.
His son has a similar name spelled differently, Armstead Jr. in the MILES FAMILY TREE.
The names of the children were provided in a family document found in a store window in Macon. The document had been found in a lawyers old office above the store. The ages of the children was not available in that document but came from the 1850 MO census.
The obituary in the LaPlata Home Press is as follows: **************************************************************************** Uncle Johnson Miles, one of the oldest citizens of Macon county died at the residence of James Miles 12 July 1880. All the children were present for the funeral except John S. Miles of Iowa and a son in Oregon. ***************************************************************************** Armstead J. Miles died in July 1880 at the residence of his son, J.C. Miles in Adair county, Mo. He was born in Buckingham county, VA, 15 October 1796. At the age of sixteen years served his country six months in the war of 1812. He was married 8 October 1821, to Elizabeth Arthur, to whom thirteen children were born, five daughters and eight sons, of whom six sons and one daughter survive. He emigrated to Pulaski county KY, in 1830. In 1839 he removed to Macon county, Mo., then wilderness. In 1857 he lost his wife and since has lived the most of the time among his children. He was buried on the family burying ground beside his companion.

Elizabeth Anderson Arthur

Elizabeth Anderson Arthur was recorded as her correct name in the William A. MILES family bible. In this bible Elizabeth's death date was May 16, 1857 indicating she died on her birthday 57 ywears later. After finding her tomb stone I was quick to say the tombstone showing May 24, 1857 was in error because of the bible information.
After pondering this for some time, I concluded there is a stronger possibility someone recorded Elizabeth's death date in error than allowing the tomb stone to contain an error. The same stone was used for both Armstead and Elizabeth so Armstead's information was probably the last information to be added to the stone. There is of course some likelyhood the stone was purchased for both of them well after their deaths but there is no way of knowing at this time.

82. Amanda A. Miles

Died as an infant. Recently some information found in the Macon Public Library mentions the location of Armstead J and Elizabeth (Arthur) Miles grave on property then owned by David Carnahan. A stone for Amanda said she was a daughter of A.J. & E.A. Miles, born April 9 1845 and died September 12, 1845.

19. Rebecca Miles

John Oxley & Rebecca married 2 April 1814 in Bedford Co. VA.
In Franklin Co. VA 12 December 1831, John Oxley marries Mary Mason, Daughter of Lewis Mason.
An 1845 suit brought by Armistead Miles against Nancy Grubbs is in behalf of the heirs of William Miles and was recorded in Pulaski Co. KY.
Notes in a family folder in a somerset library mentions Rebecca as an heir of half blood.
A November 1850 entry in a Pulask Co. KY deed book also lists the heirs at the time of sale of the property and Rebecca is now known to be deceased. Four of her children are listed as heirs; Armistead Oxley, Benjamin Oxley, Sanford Oxley and Buford Oxley. Other researchers do not show the same list of children. Apparently there were no female children alive by November 1850.

John Oxley

John Oxley's age comes from the 1850 Franklin Co. VA census as well as the children from his second wife, Mary Mason, dau. of Lewis. The marriage record was found in Wingfield's Works.
The children born from the first wife were listed in William MILES 1843 will registered in Pulaski Co. KY.
