Obituary for Thomas D. Wilkinson (d.1886)

Thomas D. WILKINSON died at 3 o'clock, Saturday am Dec. 25, 1886, at his residence near Moscow, at the age of 65 years 9 months and 23 days. He had been a sufferer from an affection of his heart for some months, but the ailment did not become serious, nor the air of death breath through his soul until that morning.
Deceased was a native of Kentucky, where he was married to Sarah Jane WILKINSON. There were born to them eight sons and three daughters, all of whom are living, with the exception of a daughter, who died about ten years ago. Telegrams were sent to three of his sons, Logan, Robert, and Edgar, who were absent and who arrived home that evening, when one of those sad scenes which pen cannot describe, and where the veil must not be drawn, occurred, when those sons first realized that their kind, gentle and benevolent parent had passed away. He was buried on the following Sunday at the Thornhill graveyard, by the Masonic fraternity, and the throng of people who assembled at the late home of the deceased, as well as the multitude that followed him to his resting place, attested that the obsequies were those of one respected by all.
He was a devout member of the Christian Church, and the members, young and old (many having known him from childhood, which growing years have more and more endeared to their hearts) together with his happy family circle, where his devotion was unceasing, will deplore his loss.

Thou art gone to the gave but we will not deplore thee,
Though sorrows and darkness encompass the tomb;
Thy Savior has passed through its portals before thee,
And the lamp of his love is thy guide through the gloom,

Thou art gone to the grave - we no longer behold thee,
Nor tread the rough paths of the world by thy side.
But the wide arms of mercy are spread to enfold thee,
And the sinners may die, for the sinless has died.

Thou art gone to the grave but we will not deplore thee,
Whose God was thy ransom, thy guardian and guide,
He gave thee, He took thee, and He will restore thee,
And death has no sting, for the Savior has died .
