Uncited original clipping from the family archives of Betty Lavy Krieg.
James C. Whalen eldest son of Michael and Annie WHALEN, departed from this life March 30, 1913 at his home in St. Louis, Mo. He was born in Chickasaw County, Iowa, February 13, 1866. He came to Lincoln County, MO., at the age of one year, which was his home until about seventeen years ago, when he removed to St. Louis, which was his home until his death.
He united in marriage with Miss Mary LAVIN in 1901. To this union six children were born, who with their mother are left to mourn their loss. He also leaves a widowed mother, Mrs. Annie WHALEN of St. Louis, one sister, Mrs. B. F. SNEAD of Moscow Mills, and two brothers, Emmette and Thomas of St. Louis.
Mr. Whalen was a patient sufferer of paralysis for about fifteen months and although his life had been despaired of for sometime, the announcement of his death was a shock to all who knew him, and cast a gloom over his friends.
He was laid to rest in Calvary Cemetery on April 1st at 2:30 p.m.; a large crowd
followed the remains to his resting place, which showed how many friends he had. The
casket was covered with beautiful cut flowers and floral offerings from St. Vincent
Society, the Woodman lodge and other dear friends. He was a loving husband and kind father
and was highly esteemed by his friends and neighbors. May the comforter day the tears and
cheer the hearts of those so deeply bereaved.--A Neice
