DEATH OF DR. J. W. WELCH
Died - At his home in Elsberry, Monday, June 27, 1898, Dr. James W. W. WELCH, age
74 years. Deceased had been, for a long number of years, a resident of Hurricane township,
where he was highly respected by all who knew him. He was a life long Democrat and stood
high in the councils of his party. In 1860 he was elected representative of the county in
the lower house of the Missouri legislature, where he served with ability. We print below
a deserved tribute to his memory by one who knew him almost a half century. Knowing the
subject of this notice as we did, we can emphatically endorse every word said of him by
Mr. FRAZIER. We, but failed, to get data concerning Dr. WELCHs long and useful life.
"God, by His inscrutable providence has called from among those whom he had lived and
labored for many long years, and been universally beloved and highly honored, Dr. James W.
WELCH, late of Elsberry. While all Christian people must obediently and reverently bow
submissively to the divine will, even though the bereavement seem grievous indeed to us,
still is would be more than mortal not to mourn the loss of such a citizen. Having had the
great blessing of an intimate acquaintance of more than forty-four years with the
deceased, a boarder in my family for more than a year, and during all those years enjoying
his confidence and friendship such an extent as to acquaint me fully with the inner life
of this great and good man, I desire to publicly attest my appreciation of him and my
heartfelt sympathy for his estimable wife and family in their great bereavement. But few
people have been called from these ends of the earth to the home in the great beyond who
left as good records behind them. Dr. WELCH was, in all the walks of life, an
exemplification of the true workmanship of God. He was a noble, true man, a learned
physician, devotedly attached to his profession so kid and tender-hearted that no one ever
called upon him for succor in sickness or distress in vain. Many are the debts of
gratitude due him for his untiring devotion in the cause of humanity. He was a
broad-minded, liberal Christian gentleman. An almost life-long, zealous member of
the M. E. Church, South, he adorned in all of us his life-work the cause of Christ. As a
husband and father, his example was ever worthy of emulation by every husband and father.
A citizen of spotless integrity, his word was better than gold. Elevated to positions of
trust by his countrymen, he was as true to duty as the needle to the pole. A
neighbor surpassed by none, a friends as steadfast as truth itself, he lived a life which
left an impress only for good upon the lives of those who knew him. Though well advanced
in years, his departure from the walks of men will be deeply mourned and his place hard
indeed to fill. When I consider the personal loss I sustain in the absence of so good and
true a friend, I could not have the courage to say to his bereaved wife, children and
grandchildren, "Weep not as those who have no hope." A wife man and a safe
counselor is gone. "He rests from his labors and his works do follow him."
