OBITUARY
Douglas Hester WALTON, son of Josiah Hester and Mary Ellen (WYATT is inserted here) WALTON, was born on September 27, 1877, near Hawk Point, Mo., and departed this life January 4, 1956, at 7:25 a.m. at the Lincoln County Memorial Hospital, Troy, Missouri.
On August 24, 1910 he was united in marriage to Rebecca Anne GIBBS, at Montgomery City, Missouri. To this union 9 children were born, 6 sons and 3 daughters; namely - Douglas Halbert, of Kirkwood, Mo., Thomas BonDurant, of Spokane, Wa., Mary Jane, now Mrs. Martin E. SEIDEL, of Troy, Mo., Flavius Hester, of Kirkwood, Mo., Rebecca Georgia, now Mrs. Walter SANDERS, of Affton, Mo., George Wyatt, of Troy, Mo., Porter Taylor, of Dayton, Ohio; Betty Belle, now Mrs. Charles CREECH, of Troy, Mo., and Robert Josiah, of Hawk Point, Mo. The children all survive. He also leaves to mourn his passing 6 daughters-in-law, 3 sons-in-law, 15 grandchildren, 1 niece, 3 nephews, numerous cousins, and a host of friends. Mrs. WALTON preceeded him in death on June 18, 1955.
Mr. WALTON united with the Hawk Point Christian Church at an early age, and was an active member his entire life. Mrs. WALTON and all their children were members of this church. Mr. WALTON lived his entire life in the vicinity of Hawk Point, with the exception of two years, which he spent in St. Louis when a young man. He was a rural mail carrier for thirty years, retiring to other activities in 1935, including auctioneering and farming. Farming was his favorite occupation, as he loved the soil. He was an active man until a short time before his death.
Mr. WALTON was a member of one of the pioneer families in Lincoln and Warren counties. His forebearers came from Virginia and Kentucky about the decade following the Louisana Purchase and settling in the vicinity of Sand Run Church, in Lincoln County, and Charet Creek in Warren County. He is the last member of his immediate family, 2 brothers and 3 sisters having preceeded him in death.
Mr WALTON stood for every good movement in the community. He had courage of his convictions, and never hesitated to express his beliefs and opinions. He played a large part in the development of the vicinity of Hawk Point. He was active in all civic affairs. He served on the church board for a number of years, and on the school board. He was a loving husband and father, a loyal friend, and a kind and helpful neighbor. "The successful man is one who has lived well, laughed often, and loved much. Who has gained the respect of old men and the love of little children. Who has filled his niche and accomplished his task . Who has left the world a better place than he found it, whether by a song, an improved poppy, or a rescued soul. Whose life has been an inspiration. whose memory a benidiction." Truly , Douglas Hester WALTON was a successful man. He will live on, not only in the lives of his children and grandchildren, but also in the hearts and lives of the people in the community of which he was so vital a part---By a friend and neighbor.
