Obituary for Harry W. Twellman (1921-2002)

Funeral services for Harry W. TWELLMAN, of St. Clement, Mo., were held at 10 a.m., Saturday, May 18, at St. Clement Catholic Church. Father Richard Frank and Father Jerry Stockman officiated. Burial was in the St. Clement Cemetery.

Mr. TWELLMAN, 80, died Tuesday, May 14, 2002, at Boone Hospital Center, Columbia, after a short illness.

Born Aug. 18, 1921, in Silex, Mo., he was the son of William Lawrence and Agnes SULLIVAN TWELLMAN. He graduated from Silex High school in 1939.

He worked in Buffalo, N.Y., for two years, returning to Silex in 1941. He was inducted into the armed services in 1942 and served in World War II with the 91st Cavalry Reconnaissance Troop 91st Division in Africa and Italy from April 1944 until he was wounded on Oct. 9, 1944. He was recipient of the Purple Heart. He was honorably discharged, at rank of sergeant, on Dec. 16, 1945.

He married Julia GRAWE on April 7, 1945, and lived in the Silex-Millwood area for two years. They purchased a farm in April 1948 near St. Clement where they raised their family. Mr. TWELLMAN started a fertilizer business in 1959, which he managed until he retired in 1985.

He was a member of the St. Clement Knights of Columbus for more than 50 years, was also a Fourth Degree Knight and Past Grand Knight and was named Knight of the Year 1995.

Survivors include five sons, David TWELLMAN and wife Sue of Cary, N.C., Larry TWELLMAN and wife Mary of DeSoto, Gene TWELLMAN and wife Debbie of Kansas City, Mo., Jim TWELLMAN and wife, Kathy of Lake St. Louis and Tony TWELLMAN and wife Doris of Bowling Green; three daughters, Dr. Dorothy TWELLMAN and her friend Diane ALVIES of Canon City, Colo., Carol THIEL and her husband Charles of Columbia and Kathleen (Chip) HALEY and her husband Robert of Rome, N.Y.; 14 grandchildren; one great-grandson; one brother, Herman and his wife, Judy of Bowling Green and two sisters, Vivian ZANDER of Festus and Bernice HADDOCK of Troy.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Julia.

Visitation was held from 4-8 p.m. Friday at Kirk’s Funeral Chapel in Bowling Green.
