ObituarySanford TUCKER
Death has stilled the heart of another of Lincoln countys venerable and highly respected citizens in the passing of John Sanford TUCKER, who died at the home of his son, Archie, in St. Louis at 1:40 p.m., Saturday, February 17, 1940. "Uncle Sant", as he was familiarly known for many years, was 89 years, 4 months and 28 days of age. He was born near Chantilly, September 19, 1850 and lived 78 years of his life in that community. His wife died in 1929. After her passing, he lived with his children until his death.
He was the son of Milner and Mahala BRENT TUCKER. At the age of 24, he married Malinda BRITT, of Burr Oak community. To this union nine children were born, eight survive; one son George died in 1904 on his 21st birthday.
He was a member of the Christian Church 57 years and was active in the church work until his declining years. He first united with the Corinth Church near Foley, joining under the ministry of Rev. T. A. ABBOTT. He afterwards became a charger member of this church, New Galilee, in 1900. He was always known and respected as one of the finest Christian men. He and his wife, Aunt Linda, exerted a wholesome influence on a large circle of children, grandchildren, and neighbors and friends.
His birthday celebration for the last 30 years was always the high spot for many and for the last years always attracted large gatherings at the city park, St. Charles where it was held.
Besides his eight children, he is survived by 36 great grand children, 22 grand children, 6 step-grand children, many nieces and nephews.
The surviving children are: Omer TUCKER, Louisiana; Mrs. LaVerta LaRUE, Mrs. Dean SITTON, and Mrs. James LaRUE, all of St. Charles; Mrs. Minnie LANGFORD, Avon, Ill.; Mrs. Annie RICKS, Troy; Mrs. Florence RICKS, of near Moscow; and Archie of St. Louis.
To the above obituary of "Uncle Sant: the undersigned desires to express his high appreciation of the TUCKER family, a sentiment which we are sure is held by the entire vicinity in which he has spent his long life. He lived a vigorous, yet quiet life, seeking only to direct and sustain his own family, and to be a good neighbor and a substantial citizen.
In all this he succeeded well. He was a true Christian, a faithful member of the church, and a real helper for his pastor. He will be missed by us all.
His funeral services were held in his church, New Galilee, Monday afternoon, Feb. 19, and he was buried by the side of his wife in the cemetery near by. A large crowd attended. Rev. M. D. DUDLEY, his long-time pastor, conducted the services.
"At length the door is opened, and free from pain and sin
With joy and gladness on his head, the pilgrim enters in;
The Master bids him welcome and on the Fathers breast
By loving arms enfolded, the weary is at rest.
The pilgrims staff is left behind, behind the sword and shield.
The armor dimmed and dented on many a hard-fought field;
His now the shining palace, the garden of delight,
The palm, the robe, the diadem, the glory ever bright."
Our sincere sympathy is hereby tendered to the sorrowing ones.
Faithfully,
M. D. DUDLEY
