OBITUARY for Margaret D. TRESCOTT CANNON
Troy Free Press, Lincoln County, Missouri, February 21, 1941

Margaret D. TRESCOTT

Margaret Darling TRESCOTT was born March 14, 1867 and departed this life Feb. 2, 1941.

On Nov. 15, 1885 she was married to James William CANNON in Bethany Methodist Church, which her father, Enos TRESCOTT, had built. To this union were born seven children, all of whom survive. They are Owen, Printha (Mrs. Louis FOSTER), Roger, Roxie (Mrs. Fount LUSSE), Ferman, J. W. and Rachael (Mrs. Albert BECKEMEIER). She is survived by the seven children, four daughters-in-law, three sons-in-law, one great grandson, two brothers George and Enos (Bud) TRESCOTT, two sisters, Mrs. Alice CRENSHAW and Mrs. Katie MILLER, two nieces, nephews and relatives too numerous to mention.

Early in life she united with the Methodist Church at Bethany. Later she became a member of New Salem Baptist Church, from which she moved her membership to Foley Baptist Church, where she and her husband faithfully occupied the second seat in front of the stove for many years.

She was preceded in death by her husband who passed away Feb. 13, 1940. Up to that time, although getting old in years, she was young in spirit and quick of step. Always ready to get in the car with "Dad" and go to visit one of her children. Often when a revival was being held at their church, they would go every night.

But her spirit was gone when Dad went away, and overnight she became suddenly old, tired and ill. In the 54 years they enjoyed together, they had become so necessary to each other that life seemed over and done with, when her husband died.

She with her unselfish love and patience, taught her large family to love one another, to give and take, and it would be hard to find a family more devoted. My prayer is that I might live as she whose heart was big enough for all. There were no in-laws in her family, they were all her children.

The church would not hold all of the many friends and relatives who came to pay their last respects to one of God’s noble women. The former minister of Foley Church, Rev. R. T. CAMPBELL of Bowling Green, was the officiating minister. He was assisted by Rev. J. K. EAST of Foley Church, Rev. LYNN and Rev. and Mrs. BERNEKING of Troy who sang the songs they had used for Mr. CANNON’s funeral, because they had comforted the family so much at that time.

The same six grandsons were pallbearers and four granddaughters carried sprays of flowers. Surely Dad and Mother have found their gold mine in the sky. And the tears need no longer come to Dad’s eyes as he listens to the strains of his favorite song, "When You and I Were Young, Maggie" for now they are forever young. – A Daughter-in-Law
