Obituary for William Smith, Sr. (-1877)

SUDDEN DEATH.

Mr. Wm. SMITH, aged 74 years, was found dead on his farm, about four miles from Troy, last Thursday evening. Early in the morning his sons had gone over to Capt. HOWELL's to work in the harvest field, and a few hours later the old gentleman remarked that he would walk over to the Captain's and see how the boys were getting along, intending to pass around one of his own fields to put up some rails that he had noticed were down. In the evening when his sons returned, their mother asked them where their father was. They hadn't seen him. Search was instantly commenced. He was found dead near the fence he had spoke of repairing. His cane was resting against the fence, as if he had placed it there while putting up the rails, and his body was lying a short distance off. He had apparently dropped dead shortly after reaching the spot where he was found, as the body presented the appearance of having been dead some hours. It is supposed he died of heart disease. Mr. SMITH was an honorable, upright citizen, and highly respected by all who knew him.
