Obituary for David Barton Smiley (1831-1922)

DAVID BARTON SMILEY,
Son of Major Samuel and Emily T. SMILEY, was born on the old SMILEY homestead in the northern part of Lincoln county, March 13, 1831, and died at the home of his son, G. B. SMILEY, in Troy, Mo., February 22, 1922. From 1850 to 1859 he was in the mercantile business in Troy. The remainder of his life was spent on the old homestead and on his farm, which was a part of it, until November, 1919, when he went to Troy, where he lived until his death.
He was probably the oldest Mason in the county, having been initiated in that order in the Troy lodge in June, 1854. He was also a charter member of the Troy Odd Fellow’s lodge.
He was married to Miss Mildred WELCH, a daughter of William WELCH, May 14, 1851. This union lasted 69 years, his wife dying May 5, 1920.
Sometime between 1850 and 1859, while living in Troy, they united with the Methodist church. In August, 1882, they became members of the Mill Creek Baptist church and he was a member of that church at the time of his death.
He leaves four sons and one daughter, Samuel, James, George, Frank and Josephine, also six grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted by his pastor, Rev. J. S. EAMES, at Mill Creek February 24, after which he was laid to rest in Mill Creek cemetery by the Masonic Order.
