Obituary for Mary Jane Walton Seidel  (d.1989)

            Mary Jane, first daughter of Douglas and Rebecca GIBBS WALTON, was born at Hawk Point, Mo.  She passed away Thursday afternoon, January 26, 1989 in St. Mary’s Hospital, Richmond Heights, Mo. following a lengthy illness.

            She was married to Martin Edward SEIDEL, December 27, 1942.  He preceded her in death on November 5, 1984.

            Surviving Mrs. SEIDEL are her children, Martin Edward SEIDEL, Jr. and his wife, Sharon of Logan, Iowa and Nancy and her husband, Howard WHEELER of St. Louis; the light of her life, her two precious granddaughters, Mary Michelle and Cynthia Rae SEIDEL of Logan, Iowa; her six brothers, Hal WALTON and his wife, Lelah of Kirkwood, Thomas B. WALTON and his wife, Ellen of Edmonds, Washington, Flay WALTON of St. Louis, George WALTON and his wife, Betty of Troy, Porter WALTON and his wife, Emily of Fairfax Station, Virginia and Bob WALTON and his wife, Joyce of Troy.  Her sisters, Rebecca SANDERS and Betty Belle and her husband, Charles L. CREECH, all of Troy; her husband’s sister Christina and her husband, Ed BROEGER of Seguine, Texas; her husband’s sister-in-law, Minnie SEIDEL of Smyrna, Georgia; a number of cousins, nieces, and nephews and innumerable friends including her special friend, Thomas HIGGINS, Jr. and his wife, Stella Mae of Troy.

            Mary Jane attended the Hawk Point schools until transferring to Buchanan High School in Troy.  She went to St. Louis where she studied cosmetology for two years at the Marinella Beauty College.  She returned to Troy and became an operator for Willie McCullogh and Dot Holmes at the Fashion Shop.  A few years later she purchased a beauty shop in Troy from Irene Johnson and operated this until recently as Mary Jane’s Beauty Shop.  She was a beautician in Troy for fifty years.

            Mary Jane was a member of the First Christian Church and taught the Kindergarten class of the Sunday School for nearly fifty years. She was a member of the Edna Ricks Circle of the church and the church choir.  She was also a member of the Troy Garden Club and the Troy Chapter Order of the Eastern Star No. 405.  She was past-president of the Evangeline Literary Club.  She received the Paul Harris Award from the Rotary Foundation through the Troy Rotary Club.  In 1974 she received the Troy “Woman of the Year” Award from the Troy Chamber of Commerce.

            A service of tribute and memory for Mrs. SEIDEL was held in the First Christian Church of Troy Sunday, January 29, 1989, conducted by her pastor, the Rev. Phil Coe.  Interment was in the Troy City Cemetery beside her husband.

            Casket bearers were her nephews: Doug WALTON, George WALTON, Jr., Hal WALTON, Mike WHALEN, Clem CREECH and Mike WALTON.  Honorary casket bearers were Steve HENDERSON, Larry POHLMAN, Austin CREECH, Bill HUNGATE, Will RAMSEY, Richard CHUMNEY, Harold CANNON and Jim WHALEN.

            Arrangements were through the Kemper-Marsh Funeral Home of Troy.
