Obituary for DeWitt Clinton Russell (d.1946)

DeWitt Clinton RUSSELL departed this life at his home in the city, APR.18,1903, after a
lingering illness of many months.
He was born Sep.7, 1828, in Simpsonville, Ky., and married Sarah C. ELLIS June 5, 1855 and
with his wife moved to Mo. in 1856 and settled in Troy.
To this union were born 8 children, 4 of whom preceeded him to the grave.
His wife died Aug.1, 1873, and on Dec. 30, 1879 he married Martha BAILEY, nee PHOEBUS, who
several years ago was stricken with paralysis, but still survives him. No child was
born to this union.
Four children, H. H. of Granite City, IL., Ira L. RUSSELL, Lizzie Q. (QUARRELLS) THURMON married
Nellie BRADLEY, of this city (TROY) and 18 grandchildren, 2 sisters, Mrs. Hanoro H.SMITH,
of Pendleton, Ky., and Mrs Pattie R.HUGHES, of Simpsonville, Ky.and one brother,
P.H.RUSSELL, of the U.S.Mint, San Francisco, Ca, and many other

He was by occupation a hardware merchant. The writer had the good fortune to know, love
and honor this noble man, for he was truly one of God's noblemen for many years.
Some 15 years ago he became converted to religion under the preachng of Rev.
Gibson, and united with the M. E. Church in this city and from that time to his death was
a zealous, devout and humble Christian and when the supreme moment came he was ready,
anxious and fully ready to go, and gently, sweetly and calmly fell asleep.--------[part
