Elizabeth, daughter of John and Elizabeth Shannon, was born near Brussells, in this county on June 24, 1851, and died in Elsberry July 6, 1918, aged 67 years and 13 days.

On October 1^st, 1878, she became the wife of Thos. Reid, who survives her. Two children blessed this union-- a daughter, Adeline Elizabeth, dying in infancy, and a son Salem S. Reid, who has grown into manhood in this city.

In early life Mrs. Reid united with the Mt. Zion Associate Reformed church, transferring her membership to the Elsberry church when it was organized. She lived consistently and faithfully her profession-- loved the church, and gave freely of time, effort and material gifts in all departments of church activity. It was her great pleasure always to be in her place in the house of worship on the sabbath day, so long as her health permitted.

Her last illness extended over a period of fourteen months, her suffering at times being intense. The end came peacefully in the twilight hour of the day, and, just as day glides into night, so her spirit gently took its flight.

Besides the husband and the son there remain within the family circle the devoted daughter-in-law, Mrs. Lucy Mitchell Reid and a little grandson, Ernest. There are also two brothers surviving, J. S. Shannon, of St. Louis, and W. A. Shannon of Leslie, Ark.

Funeral services were held at the A. R. P. church in this city Monday morning at ten o'clock, Rev. T. J. Phillips and Rev. W. N. Giddens officiating, and the body was laid to rest in the Reid cemetery near Okete.

Members of the family are deeply appreciative of the many kindnesses shown by friends and neighbors in their hours of bereavement.

Thomas Reid, aged 75 years, a native of Lincoln County and a resident of Elsberry for the past 27 years, died a his home in the west part of town Sunday afternoon. Funeral services were held at the family residence Tuesday afternoon and interment was made in the Reid cemetery, near Okete. He is survived by one son, Salem S. Reid.

Mr. Reid's parents were one of the pioneer families of this community, having settled on a farm near what is now the village of Okete, many years ago. He was born May 27, 1851, and died July 4, 1926 at the age of 75 years, one month and seven days. He was buried on the eighth anniversary of the death of his wife, who was before her marriage on October 1, 1878, Miss Elizabeth Shannon . Of two children born to them, the daughter, Adeline Elizabeth, died in infancy. The son, Salem S., with his wife and two children, Ernest and Ann Elizabeth, are left to cherish the memory of the departed.

For many years Mr. Reid followed farming, coming to Elsberry when his son was quite young in order to give the benefit of the schools there. He was for many years a member of Mt. Zion A. R. P. church and a deacon in that congregation. When Elsberry A. R. P. church was organized he became a charter member and served as deacon an treasurer until his death. He was most faithful in attendance at church services and in performance of his official duties. Being the last of his generation in Elsberry congregation, his counsel was sought and heeded by officers and members of the church, where he will be appreciably missed.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. J. P. Knox, pastor of Elsberry and Mt. Zion churches, who read several appropriate passages of scripture and delivered a brief discourse of comforting character.

Until three months ago Mr. Reid was a frequent visitor to the down town section, but had not been out of the immediate neighborhood of his home since. He was confined to his bed about ten days, suffering from complications which caused him to fail rapidly toward the end.

Little Bessie, infant daughter of Thomas and Lizzie Reid, died near Auburn, Mo., December 25^th, 1883, aged 14 months and 13 days.

She was an only child, and occupied an undivided place in the hearts of fond parents. In her their affections centered, and there was not a hope nor a dream of the future with which she was not prominently associated. But she belonged to God. He who loaned her for a little season to brighten the home and gladden the hearts of these parents, sent and took her again unto himself. May He give them his grace to bow in sweet and trustful submission to His sovereign will, and enable them to say, in the triumph of Christian faith, "The Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away, blessed be the name of the Lord." "His ways are unsearchable"; but we know that He "doeth all things well."
