TO THE MEMORY OF C. H. REED

Deceased was born April 2, 1874, and died September 10, 1898, aged 24 years, 5 months and 8 days.

He was born in this county in which he lived almost continually until his death. He was left an orphan early in youth, his father having died when he was but two years old. His mother was only permitted to remain one short year when she, too, was called to join her husband in the beautiful city of God. He and his sister were then carefully and tenderly reared by their grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. S. J. OMOHUNDRO.

Deceased was truly one of the excellent of the earth. He was a graduate of the Gem City Business College at Quincy. He was intelligent, handsome, popular, genial, competent, and well equipped for a prosperous life. After leaving school he entered the Bank of Lincoln County as assistant cashier, which position he filled with accuracy and ability until the thirteenth day of July, when he was taken with hemorrhage of the lungs, from which he gradually grew weaker until death claimed him as his victim.

Although he was no member of any church he, while conversing with a friend a few days before his death, said: “I would like to live, but I am not afraid to die, I have always been a good boy and have never done anyone a wrong.” Can we all say as much when we come to face death? I fear not. He was carefully and tenderly cared for by his faithful grandparents and retained his politeness of manners (showing his good training) to the last hours of his life.

During his six weeks of illness he was never heard to complain but was always cheerful and glad to see his friends when they would call to see him. The many who tendered their services during his illness and the large concourse that followed him to his last resting place was an evidence of the high esteem in which he was held by those who knew him.

So slowly sank life’s ebbing sands;

All pain is air, his life work done,

Forever at rest is the tired hand.
