Death of James READ

The subject of this sketch was born May 19, 1847. Forty - one years ago last January he was married to Miss Frances RECTOR, who preceded him to the grave some 12 years. Five years ago he married a sister to his first wife, who still survives him. To the first union these were born, four daughters and one son. Two, Mrs. Charley CALHOUN and Mrs. John GALLOWAY of Bowling Green, and two, Mrs. Mint BRISCOE and Mrs. James ORRH, reside near Briscoe, where the son also lives. Besides his family he leaves one brother, John Samuel READ (sic), and two sisters, Mrs. Fulton SITTON and Mrs. Benson BROYLES of Briscoe.

Hs funeral was preached by Bro. B. F. DeJarnatt, whose remarks were appropriate, beautiful and true.

After singing and prayer, all that was mortal of James READ was conveyed to the Auburn cemetery and placed by the side of his good wife, whom he knew from her childhood.

James READ, as all men, may have his faults, but his virtures as a father, neighbor, and citizen out weighed them all.

He joined the Christian Church at old Sulphur Lick under the preaching of Elder Timothy Ford over 35 years ago and remained a consistant member during the remainder of earthly life. Peace to his ashes - A neighbor.
