DIED

PILCHER----At his home in this city, Monday afternoon, Sept. 5 1898, at 5:30 o'clock, Jno. W. PILCHER, of a complication of troubles of several years' duration. This death closes an interesting life of 72 years, the latter part of which was marked with suffering, which, however, was bravely borne. Mr. PILCHER was born in Dover, England, Oct. 5, 1826, and at the age of nine years was apprenticed to the trade of fine shoe - making. He served at this apprenticeship for seven years, becoming a finished workman.

He was married, Sept. 13, 1848, to Miss Elizabeth BANKS, of Dover, and at the time of his death this aged couple lacked but a few days of celebrating their fiftieth wedding anniversary. Twenty-eight years ago he came to America, to St. Louis; resided there two years and then removed to Troy, where he had since lived. He was first foreman of the old CAKE-RODGERS tannery and shoe factory, and later engaged in the grocery business, which he followed until two years since, when ill health forced him to retire. He was one of the charter members of I.O.O.F. Lodge No.5, of St. Louis, and at the time of his death was a member of it.

Besides his aged wife, deceased left two sons and two daughters to mourn his death. Funeral services were conducted by the Troy lodge of I.O.O.F. Tuesday aternoon, at 3 o'clock, after which the remains were interred in the Troy cemetery. Those who knew J. W. PILCHER, and there were many, will cherish the memory of an honest, sincere man,   who, though but slightly educated in childhood, had much genuine knowledge, and whose disposition was cheery and happy under all circumstances. Mr. PILCHER was brought up in the Episcopal church, but at the time of his death was a member of no denomination.
