ELMER MEYER Drowns as He Attempts Rescue
Elmer MEYER, 22 years old a former Buchanan high school student when his family lived at Troy, was drowned in the Mississippi River near Chouteau Island, Sunday afternoon when he and a friend dived into the river to save a girl companion. Caught by the swift current, MEYER was unable to to save himself and his man companion, exhausted, was unable to save him. Elmer was known as " Elmer Tuggle" by his school mates ... His mother, who is a widow, and a brother and sister survive him. The family moved to St. Louis several years ago....
Include in Free Press, excerpt from Monday's Globe -Democrat : MEYERs companion , Ralph HAMPP, 7121 Glenmore Ave. Pine Lawn, St. Louis Co. rescued the girl, Miss Ann FISHER, 4118 Arsenal St., and then went to the aid of MEYER, but after struggling with the latter for several minutes finally had to release his hold and was saved himself by his pet police dog, "Fat", who held him up until Alois STAREK, of 2832 Neosho St. picked him up in a motor boat......
Swam to Reef Miss FISHER, the two men and Mrs. HAMPP drove to the river shortly after 1 p.m. yesterday. Mrs. HAMPP remained in the car while the others entered the river and swam to the reef, which was about 70 feet from the island. Both HAMPP and MEYER were regarded as expert swimmers. MEYER was a caretaker at Bellefontaine Cemetery. He was single and lived with his mother, Mrs. Docie MEYER, brother and a sister. MEYER attended Beaumont high school and played on the football team.
