Obituary for Virginia Marie McMahan (1892-1980)

Virginia Marie McMAHAN was born near Troy, Mo., June 5, 1892, the daughter of Malcolm & Hattie HAMMOND THURMAN. She passed away in the Elsberry Health Care Center, Elsberry, Mo., early Weds. morning, Sept. 17, 1980. She was 88 years 3 months and 12 days of age.
On July 14, 1911, she was married to Riley McMAHAN. Mr. McMAHAN passed away in Nov. of 1942. She was also preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Cleo THURMAN, one brother, Gervis THURMAN and his wife Ida, and one brother-in-law, Virgil CHENORE. She is survived by one sister, Laura Vic CHENORE of Wentzville, her husband's nieces & nephews, many cousins and innumerable friends.
After her marriage to Mr. McMAHAN, Mrs. McMAHAN joined the Sugar Creek Methodist Church. Her membership was later transferred to the St. Stephen United Methodist Church in Troy.
Mrs. McMAHAN moved to Wentzville several years ago. She was always interested in community work, and was instrumental in organizing the Wentzville Community Club of which she was a charter member. She was also a member of the Wentzville Senior Citizens Club.
While living in Troy area, Mr. & Mrs. McMAHAN often entertained young people. Both she and Mr. McMAHAN played music and on many Sunday afternoons, young people would gather in their home for an afternoon and evening of music and fellowship. Their love was always open to their friends, neighbors, and relatives.
Mrs. McMAHAN was a very active lady until 1971 when she first became ill. All during her illness, she had the care of her loving family. Her one sister, who survives, visited or called her often.
All who knew Mrs. McMAHAN have fond memories of a lady who was always friendly, anxious to be of service, and always smiling. She was a friend to all who knew her.
Funeral services for Mrs. McMAHAN were conducted Friday afternoon, Sept. 19, from the Kemper Marsh Funeral home in Troy. The Rev. Dave Martin, pastor of the Wentzville Baptist Church, was the minister and the vocalist was Dan Hite, of Wentzville.
Burial was in the Troy City Cemetery. Casket bearers were Porter Conley, Trevie Harrell, Parren Boyse, Garrett Bickel, Charles LaRue, and Edwin Wieman.
