Obituary of Charles William McKinsey (1860-1944)

Charles William McKinsey was the son of C. W. and Susan A. Damron McKinsey, whose married life began nearly one hundred years ago December 5, 1844. He was born near Whiteside, Mo., January 1, 1860, and was married December 25, 1878, to Analiza (Lida) Smith, daughter of Josiah and Martha Jane Smith. Two daughters were born of this union Martha Ann, now Mrs. Charles N. Gatewood, of Denver, Colo., and Rosie Lee, who was born June 12, 1885, and called to the Great Beyond October 6, 1902, at the age of 17 years. The wife and mother passed on about eight years ago, March 29, 1936. Mr. McKinsey was stricken with paralysis Sunday morning, January __ and his condition gradually grew worse until Tuesday morning, February 22, 1944, when he succumbed, at the age of 84 years, 8 months, 21 days.
He united with the Cumberland Presbyterian church when he was 17 years old, in a protracted meeting held by the late Rev. Taylor Bernard, in Mount Horeb Cumberland Presbyterian church of which the Rev. E. L. Uptegove was pastor. This church later became Elsberry Cumberland Presbyterian church. Mr. McKinsey was ordained as an elder in Mount Horeb church in 1879 and when he later placed his membership in Elsberry Associate Reformed Presbyterian church, he was received as a member of the official board, thus making in his life an unbroken service of 65 years as an elder.
His nearest surviving relatives are his daughter, Mrs. Gatewood, and Mr.Gatewood, and his youngest sister, Mrs. Mollie Christian, of Wellington, Texas.
Mr. McKinsey lived a consistent Christian life and his counsel on the board of officers was sound and unwavering. He was a faithful witness for his Master, unobtrusively embracing frequent opportunities for speaking a work in the cause so near to his heart. To him the Bible was an open book and he was well versed in the fundamentals of his Christian faith. Death for him held no terrors.
The remains lay in state at Miller’s Funeral Home until Friday afternoon, when his pastor, the Rev. W. N. Falls, conducted services in the church, and interment was made in Oak Ridge cemetery, a few miles north of town.

Charles W. McKinsey, who was stricken with partial paralysis several weeks ago, passed away in the early morning hours Tuesday, February 22, at his home on North Sixth street. His only daughter, Mrs. C. N. Gatewood, and Mr. Gatewood, of Denver had been with him during all his illness. The remains lay in state at Miller Funeral Home until the hour set for the service on Thursday afternoon, at 2:30 o’clock, in Elsberry A.R.P. church, to be followed by interment in Oak Ridge cemetery.
