Obituary for Mary Eliza Doss McCoy  (1853-1938)

            Mrs. Mary E. McCOY, who is well known here, passed away Sunday morning, September 11, 1938, in the Masonic Home at St. Louis, after an extended illness.   She was 85 years, 4 months and 28 days of age.

            The body was prepared for burial and brought to the Giles R. Hulse funeral home in Center and was later moved to the home of her son, James T. McCOY in that city.

            Mary Eliza DOSS was born April 13, 1853, at Millersburg, Callaway County, the daughter of Coleman and Elizabeth SCRUGGS DOSS.

            On October 8, 1873 she was united in marriage to William David McCOY, who passed away 13 years ago.  The family resided for a while in St. Charles County, later moving to Laddonia and then to Perry.

            To this union were born nine children, three of whom are living, Charles S. of Toledo, Ohio, James T. of Center, and Bertha (Mrs. R.V.) ROGERS of Perry.  One son, Samuel E. McCOY preceded her in death 41 years ago at the age of 17 years; the other children dying in infancy.

            She was converted early in life and at the time of her death was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church in St. Louis.  She was also a member of the Arbela Chapter 12, of the Order of the Eastern Star, at Laddonia.

            She leaves besides her children – four grandchildren, Ellen McCOY of Toledo, Ohio, Ashby McCOY of Center, Mrs. Mary Victoria GORSLINE of Williamston, Mich., and Mary Elizabeth ROGERS of Perry; one great grandson, David GORSLINE; one brother, Tinsley DOSS of Laddonia; a sister Mrs. Lula HAMILTON of Vallejo, Calif.; and a number of nieces and nephews.

            Funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon at two o’clock, in the presence of a host of friends and relatives at the home of her son, James McCOY, by Rev. John W. Golden of Hannibal.  Burial was in the Laddonia Cemetery under the direction of Giles R. Hulse of Center.  Pallbearers were H. Jasper SMITH, Arthur BESHEARS, and Dyas LIVERS, of Center, R.V. and Ernest ROGERS, and Burney FISHBACK, of Perry.  Songs were sung by Dr. W.R. HANCOCK, William HOWALD, Mrs. Wayne CARTER, and Mrs. Siebert HILL with Mrs. E.A. KEITHLY at the piano.

            Among those from out of town at the services were Mrs. Ada McCOY, of Quincy, Mrs. Claude CRAVER, Mrs. HEITMAN and daughter Erma, of Hannibal, Mr. and Mrs. Eddie McCOY, Mr. and Mrs. Delmer McCOY, and Mrs. Charles McCOY of St. Charles.

            Among those from Perry at the services were Mrs. H.O. DIXON, Mrs. L.M. DUNFEE, Miss Effie HANGER, Mrs. Sylvia FLOWERREE, Mr. and Mrs. C.S. JACKSON, Mrs. Dan TICE, Mrs. Nell BLEDSOE and grandson, Lamar BLEDSOE, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest ROGERS, Mr. and Mrs. J.E. MOOMAW, Mrs. Akridge, James CARTER, Mrs. R.S. BUCHANAN, Mr. and Mrs. S.M. ROSS, Mrs. Georgie WALTON, Judge and Mrs. Gill RICHARDS, Mr. and Mrs. A.B. YOUNG, Mr. and Mrs. Burney L. FISHBACK, Mrs. Ed R. CALDWELL, Mrs. Boone JONES, Mrs. John BERREY, S.G.
