Death of Harry T. MAYES

Following an illness of ten or twelve days of pneumonia and a complication of diseases, Harry T. MAYES passed away Saturday morning at his home about four miles northwest of Elsberry. For four days prior to the visit of the death angel, the life of Mr. MAYES hung by a slender cord. A slight improvement in his condition was observed Thursday morning and this gave anxious relatives and friends renewed hope that he might survive. Encouraging bits of information continued to filter from the sick chamber until Friday evening. He suffered a relapse that night and to those who were permitted to see him it was known that the end was only a matter of a short time. He expired about 8 o’clock Saturday morning.

Harry was the eldest son of Richard J. and Frances MAYES and was born November 31, 1873, being 40 years, two months and eight days old at the time of his death. November 2, 1900 he was united in marriage to Miss Lizzie May SMITH. To this union no children were born, but two orphan boys were given a home with them, and they found in Mr. MAYES a faithful friend and father. Having been born in Lincoln county, he always resided here. He was a progressive, thrifty farmer and a highly respected, public spirited citizen.

For many years he was a devoted member of Linn Knoll Christian church, in which he served faithfully as a deacon. As a citizen, a friend, a neighbor, and a Christian, he was greatly loved.

He leaves to mourn his departure his faithful wife, a father, mother, one brother and sister and many relatives and friends. Funeral services were conducted in the Oak Ridge Baptist church Sunday afternoon by his pastor, Rev. FERGUSON, and the remains were laid to rest in Oak Ridge cemetery.
