Obituary for Annie Clay Lewis (d.1941)

Mrs. S. R. LEWIS DEAD
Mrs. Shapleigh R. LEWIS, the former Miss Annie CALHOUN CLAY, passed away at her home near Magruder Station Wednesday morning Feb. 12 at 3 oclock. She had been in poor health for several years but had been ill in bed less than two weeks before her death.
She is survived by her husband, two sons, Odin, who is at home; and William of Whiteface, Texas; two daughters, Mrs. C. C. RICHARDS of Berkeley, Calif., and Louise of Overland; and three grandchildren, Emmy Lou and Clifford RICHARDS, Jr., of Berkeley, Calif., and Edna Louise LEWIS of Whiteface, Texas.
Mrs. LEWIS was a native of Virginia and came to Missouri to live in the home of her cousin, Will MERIWETHER and family at Ashburton in Pike County. There she made her home until her marriage.
She was related to Henry CLAY of historic fame, and was the granddaughter of Rev. Odin CLAY, an Episcopalian bishop who was a neighbor and friend of Thomas JEFFERSON.
Mrs. LEWIS has a host of friends who will miss her sadly. She was essentially a home-lover, and she and Mr. LEWIS have been famous for their hospitality.
Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at St. Johns Episcopal Church, Old Prairieville, where she had been a communicant since coming to Missouri. Rev. David COOMBS, her pastor and close friend, read the brief service. Pallbearers were: J. Davis MERIWETHER, Chas. MERIWETHER, Nick DAVIS, James DAVIS, Alpha MAGRUDER and Francis MAGRUDER.
