"HEAT FATAL TO WINFIELD MAN

"F. D. HARDESTY IS OVERCOME AND DIES WITHIN FEW HOURS

"Franklin D. HARDESTY, a pioneer of Lincoln county and one of Winfield's best known citizens, died early Friday morning from the effects of heat prostration suffered the previous afternoon, aged 84 years.

"Mr. HARDESTY spent a short time Thursday afternoon sitting on a pile of lumber watching carpenters build a house near his home. As he started home he asked some one to assist him to rise. He walked home unassisted, but fell on the porch, breaking a bone in his left arm. He was unconscious when assisted into his home and never regained consciousness, expiring Friday morning about 4 o'clock. The attending physician announced that he was overcome by heat.

"Mr. HARDESTY was a native of Shelby county, Ky., but came to Missouri on horseback when a youth and settled on a farm near New Salem church. He resided there until 1880 when he moved to Winfield and engaged in the hardware business. After several years he retired from active business, but when the bank was established in Winfield he became one of the leading spirits in its organization and was made president of the corporation. He held that position constantly until three years ago when he resigned on account of failing health.

"He was twice married, the first time to Miss Mollie OVERALL. Several years after her death he married Mrs. Ann DAWKINS, who survives him. He was the father of no children, but John IRVINE, of near Winfield, is an adopted son.

"For more than a half century he was one of the leading members of New Salem Baptist church and funeral services were conducted there Sunday by Rev. W.A. Bibb, of Louisiana, and his body laid to rest in the Overall burying ground."
