Obituary for Jennie Hamilton (1910-1922)

YOUNG GIRL DIES SUDDENLY
Heart Disease Kills Jenny HAMILTON Former Resident of Elsberry
Many hearts were saddened and heads bowed in grief when news was received here Tuesday
morning of the death the night before of little 12-year-old Jennie HAMILTON, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. G. A. HAMILTON, of Texhoma, Okla., former residents of Elsberry and
community. The message came in a telegram to Mrs. HAMILTON's uncles, J. A. and A. D. BROTHER,
and was a distinct shock, although it had been known for some time that the little girl
was ill, suffering from heart trouble and other complications.
Jennie HAMILTON was universally loved. About four or five years of her life had been spent
at different times in this community, where she is remembered by her young friends as a
delightful companion, and by their elders as a womanly child, quaint in manner and speech,
tactful beyond her years, yet without guile, capable of making herself interesting alike
to grownups or those of her own age. She was musical in her tastes and her talent along
this line was being cultivated before her health failed, one of her childish accomplishments
being a whistling and piano duet, which never failed to please her friends. She was very
bright in her studies and had entered high school in Texhoma, where she attracted much
attention of teachers and pupils owing to her youth and diminutive size. She finished
eighth grade work in the schools here just a year ago and was in the freshman class of
high school last fall until the family removed to Oklahoma in October.
Soon after Christmas Jennie's health became such that she was obliged to leave school, and
she gradually declined from that time. No particulars have been received regarding the
last few days of her life, but relatives here think the end probably came suddenly. The
little girl was twelve years old last October. She was born at Texhoma, and there her body
was laid to rest Thursday. Her death followed closely upon that of her great-grandmother,
Mrs. Jane BROTHER, who passed away only last Friday night. A brother, Ozbert, is left to
comfort the parents in their sad bereavement.
