Obituary for James F. Groshong (1832-1896)

Jas. F. GROSHONG, Deceased

Miss S. E. Hodges finds the following obituary of an early citizen in a Deadwood paper .

"James F. GROSHONG died at his Galena home, Feb. 5, 1896, aged 64 years, of inflammation of the bladder. The deceased had lived in the hills since 1877, coming here from Sioux City, Iowa, and settled on a farm near Rapid City moving later to Galena, where he and his sons had become interested in some mining property. He had not been feeling the best for the past few weeks, but paid little attention to this, thinking that his rugged constitution would carry him through. The fore part of this week he had a sinking spell but rallied, and while it was known that he was in great agony, it was thought he would continue to improve. Wednesday he was taken worse and Dr. Forrence of this city was sent for, arriving fifteen minutes before the death chill. Deceased expired surrounded by all his immediate relatives, a wife, two sons, Walter and Herbert, and a daughter, Gertrude; another son Erastus, died in California early in the winter."

"James F. GROSHONG was one of the early settlers of Grant Co.,Wis., coming in 1836, when only four years old, with Jeremiah GROSHONG's family ( his grandfather). He was brought up by his Aunt Sally GROSHONG on a farm in Hurricane. He grew up with the country and in 1857, married Miss Susan BURTON, also of the Hurricane. Sometime afterward he became interested in mining. with his Uncle James GROSHONG on Boice Prairie. He left here with his wife and three sons, the fall of 1869 and in the following spring took up a "homestead" claim near Sioux City, Iowa, and engaged in farming but becoming discouraged in trying to fight against the grasshoppers, he and his two eldest sons, in 1877, went to try their luck in the much talked of gold and silver mines of the Black Hills. Making a good strike, he sold his Iowa farm and removed his family to the Hills. He was a patriotic, conscientious citizen. honest and upright. Strong in his manhood, brave in his nature, he despised what was low, false and groveling. A valuable and faithful friend; his memory will be cherished by those who knew him best as one of nature's noblemen. S. E. H.

From the article, I took this to be a paper in Deadwood S.D.  James Franklin Groshong was born March 25, 1832 the 4th child of Jacob & Elizabeth (Perkins) Groshong at their home on Groshong Branch of the Cuivre River near Ethlyn, Mo. in Lincoln County. Jacob de Clement Groshong s/o Jeremiah Goshong and father of James F. Groshong, was the first white child born in what is now Lincoln County, Mo. 2 Oct. 1800 md. first to Elizabeth Perkins, 2nd to Eliza Jane Nichols. Jacob deClement Groshong remained in Lincon County when his parents, and siblings left for Wis. and other parts of the new territory. Some of the family came back to Lincoln Co.  jg. ]
