Following an illness of less than two hours on Thursday night of last week, May 15, death came to Mrs. Mary A. Finley, widow of the late Walker Finley, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Guy A. Ellis, near Auburn. Mrs. Finley was 75 years of age. She had been very frail for the past several years and it was known that her heart was affected, but her death was a distinct shock to those nearest to her, nevertheless.

Mrs. Finley was the daughter of Gilmore and Martha C. Gladney Finley and was born October, 1848, in Lincoln county. She was married to Walker Finley August 31, 1876, this tie being severed by the husband’s death on May 31, 1907. Seven children were born to them, one of whom, William, died in early boyhood. Those who survive are as follows: Cyrus G., of near Elsberry, Charles W., of Okete vicinity, Neva, now Mrs. I. C. Ellis, of Troy, Tena, now Mrs. F. E. Mitchell, and Georgia Belle, now Mrs. Leslie Chandler both of Okete vicinity, and Martha, now Mrs. Guy A. Ellis, of near Auburn.  There are twelve living grandchildren. A sister, Mrs. Cyrus Finley of Auburn, is the nearest surviving relative outside of the children, two sisters, Mrs. Jane Wilson and Mrs. Bettie Finley, and a brother, John Gilmore Finley, having died within the past several years.

She was a loyal member of Mt. Zion A. R. P. church, with which organization she united in young womanhood, and funeral services were conducted Saturday afternoon by the pastor, Rev. D. P. Pressly, of St. Louis, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Guy Ellis. Interment was made in the burial plot on the Sanuel Gladney farm, west of New Hope, where her husband and son and many other relatives have been laid to rest. The presence of a large company of friends and relatives testified to the esteem in which Mrs. Finley was held.
