ASLEEP
In the early morning of January 24th,1894. After a night of storm of wind and snow, the deep internations [sic] of the funeral bell escaping from the belfry of the Christian Church broke upon the ears of a startled people and the ea(missing) query who is dead was asked from house to house, until at last it was made known to a loving populace (missing) Mrs. Agnes ELLIS was dead, no (missing) dead but sleeping till the resurrection morn.
The subject of this obituary Mrs. Agnes P. ELLIS departed this life at her home in this place January the 24th 1894 at 3:15 o'clock a.m. Her health had been failing for more than two years. In April 1892 she with her daughter Mittie went to California to visit relatives hoping the trip and climate might check the disease and restore her to good health, but after a stay there of nearly two years receiving no benefit from the visit, she returned home in Troy last fall, greatly worse than when she left, and so rapidly did her health decline that soon her physician and her friends saw that the end was fast approaching; and though all that skill and tender love could do to assuage pain and restore health was done for her demise she seemed to be resting as easy as usual, her daughter fearing she might get cold in the night slept with her, and at one o'clock she got up replenished the fire in the stove, found her mother sleeping calmly and sweetly, then retired and put her arm around her and fell asleep, and awoke at 3:15 o'clock and found her dead. O! what a shock but God and that loving devoted daughter can know, death with all his warnings come to those he robs in an hour least expected.
Sister ELLIS was born in Youngstown, Ohio, April the 17th,1841, her maiden name was Agnes P. EASTON, she was fifty-two years, nine months and seven days old, she was married to John M. ELLIS, at Topeka, Kanas June 2nd 1863, and they then came to Troy and established their residence with the parents of Brother ELLIS at the homestead where they continued to live till their death, to them was born only one child, the now doubly bereft daughter Mildred YOUNG nee ELLIS after taking up their residency in Troy, they had the care of the aged father and mother of Bro. ELLIS, the mother being an invalid for many years.
Mr. JAMES W.ELLIS the father died July 9th 1879 and the m(missing) so many years of patient suffering died July 16, 1891, during all those long years, sister ELLIS devoted all her love and energies to mitigating and soothing the pains of sickness and making light as possible the many afflictions of the aged and beloved mother. Together Brother and Sister ELLIS honored themselves, by honoring their Savior and confessing His holy name in the presence of men and Angels in March 1879, under the persuasive teaching of that good man of God, D. M. Grandfield, and immediately took membership in the Christian church here, where they soon became pillars of the church, which noble position they bore to the end of their pilgranage on earth.
Sister ELLIS leaves surviving her neither father, mother, brothers or sisters and only one child, her daughter, Mildred YOUNG, whom her husband and all the people of Troy deeply sympathize in all this sad bereavement. Sister ELLIS was a lady of such rare social attainments, so kind and helping to the sick and afflicted, so hospitable and attentive to all whom she met, so pure and Godly in her walk and conversation that she was a favorite with all, and at last many sorrowing friends followed her to the silent city where she now sleeps. To such as she was. A loving tender mother, a member of society whom all loved to honor has left the sorrows of earth and gone to the city of our God. "Let not your heart be troubled, Ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Fathers house are many mansions, if it were not so I would have told you. And if I go and prepare a place for you I will come again and receive you unto myself, that where I am, there Ye may be also ." WILLIAM FRAZIER
ELLIS - At her home in this city, Wednesday morning Jan.23, 1894, Mrs. Agnes P. ELLIS.
Mrs. ELLIS had been in bad health for a number of years, and her death was not unexpected. She went to California and spent a couple of years, hoping to find a more beneficial climate, returning home last--all(fall?) to live the remainder of her days among friends tried and true.
