Obituary for W. J. DOWELL
William James DOWELL, son of John F. and Mary DOWELL, was born at Albemarle County, VA, in 1840. He moved to Missouri with his parents in 1856, and settled in Old Alexandria community, Lincoln county.
Mr. DOWELL departed this life January 8, 1930, at his home in the Sugar Creek community, at the age of 89 years 10 months and 18 days.
He was married to Julia Ann HALL, daughter of Charles HALL, April 19, 1862. It was the privilege of this couple to spend 67 years of married life together. To this union were born three children: James B. Oscar S., and one daughter Mary Caroline who preceded him in death February 18, 1891. He leaves to mourn his going, his wife Julia Ann, two brothers, Edward C. and John R. DOWELL, one sister, Mary Frances CORBIN of Winfield, two grandchildren, Homer and Camille DOWELL, and one great grandson, Will DOWELL, of St. Louis. He also raised four orphan children, three of them preceding him in death, and one survives, Mett HALL of Pamona, Howell County, MO.
Mr. DOWELL came to Sugar Creek community 60 years ago, where he spent the remainder of his life on his farm. He professed religion in Birkhead school house, and joined the Old Alexander Methodist Church 70 years ago, under the ministry of Rev. Isaac Thompson. He later Joined Sugar Creek church, in which he remained to his death.
He is thought to be the oldest man in Lincoln county.
He was a good husband and father. May his wife and children look beyond the grave and see that he is not dead but just Away. Peace to his remains. - S. M. B.
