AUNT SISSY DAMRON OLDEST ELSBERRY CITIZEN DIES
Mrs. Sejus Gabriella Damron, 100 years old, died at the Maplewood Nursing Home, Tuesday, Feb. 17, where she had been making her home for some time.
Funeral services were held from the Elsberry Baptist church at 2 p.m. Thursday with the Rev. L. D. Gregory of Whitehall, Ill., officiating, assisted by Rev. C. D. O’Neill. Burial was in the Oak Ridge cemetery.
Mrs. Damron affectionately known as “Ma Sissy” had resided in the Elsberry community practically all of her life. Her family was represented by five generations an older daughter, Mrs. W. B. Bibb residing in Webster Groves is 82 years old.
Mrs. Damron was born in Lynchburg, Va., December 13, 1852. She came overland to Missouri in a covered wagon and by steamboat, shortly following the Civil War. Her father James L. Crank, who served in the Confederate army, moved to Missouri shortly following the war, to operate a farm near Elsberry. It was here that Mrs. Damron met her husband C. W. Damron, to whom she was married on November 18, 1869.
Mrs. Damron celebrated her 100th birthday on Saturday December 13, when 14 of her direct descendants visited her at the Nursing Home in Maplewood. At that time five generations were represented from a son and daughter, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. A large birthday cake presented Aunt Sissy by the Women’s Missionary Society of the Elsberry Baptist church was enjoyed on this occasion.
Mr. Damron died on December 19, 1937 at the ripe age of 92. Besides a daughter, Mrs. Bibb of Webster Groves, Mrs. Damron leaves a son, G. V. Damron of Kansas City. Three other children, Dr. O. H. Damron, Dr. J. N. Damron and W. D. Damron preceded her in death. She has 33 direct descendants, Dr. E. O. Damron, a grandson, resides in Elsberry.
Contributor’s note: A handwritten note on the obituary states “E.D. 2-23-53”; therefore, we assume that the obituary was in the February 23, 1953 issue of The Elsberry Democrat.
