Mrs. James D. Damron Passed Away January 6
Mrs. James D. Damron, who had been ill nearly a year, died at her home in New Hope, Monday, aged 73 years. She is survived by her husband and many near relatives. The mother of ten children of whom eight are living, the number of her direct descendants are sixty-five, extending to the fifth generation. Funeral services were conducted at Oak Ridge Baptist church, north of Elsberry, Wednesday afternoon, the Rev. J. Clifton Lee, pastor of Elsberry Methodist church, officiating, assisted by the Rev. L. H. Lynn, pastor of Oak Ridge. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
Ida Ellen Davis, daughter of Alexander Davis and Mary E. Houston Davis, was born west of Corso, November 12, 1867, and died January 6, 1941, having attended the age of 73 years, 1 month, 24 days. She became the wife of J.D. Damron October 16, 1884. Ten children were born to the couple, two of whom, James Wesley, at the age of two weeks, and Paul, nearly four years old, were claimed by death. The surviving children are: Bertha, now Mrs. J. W. Rogers; Otis, of Curryville; Irene, now Mrs. Chance Rose; Myrtle, now Mrs. C. Ed Graves, of Olney; Ethyl, now Mrs. Allie Riffle, near New Hope; Owen, near Olney; Pauline, now Mrs. Everett Barnes; and Dorothy, now Mrs. Buford Holley. Mrs. Damron was the last of seven children born to Mr. and Mrs. Davis.
A paralytic stroke which she suffered in March, 1940, proved to be the beginning of the end. The second stroke, Sunday, December 29, was followed just a week later by the third stroke, and her death followed within a few hours.
Early in life Mrs. Damron united with Ebenezer Baptist church, after her marriage transferring her membership to the Methodist church and she was a member at Smith Chapel until the tie was severed by her death. To those who knew and loved her best she was held in highest esteem for her Christian traits and consistent life.
In addition to her eight surviving children there are left to mourn her passing 36 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, one great great-grandchild, and two great great great-grandchildren.
