THORNTON L. CARTER, Obituary
February 21, 1921
The funeral of Thornton L. CARTER, of Winfield, MO., was held at his home Saturday,
February 21 at 2 PM by Rev. D. M. WARREN, pastor of the Baptist church and his remains
were laid to rest in the cemetery to await the resurrection morn. Mr. CARTER was
born April 22, 1859 near Troy, Mo. His early days were spent in that community, later
moving on a farm near Winfield. Retiring from the farm two years ago, he moved to
Winfield and remained a resident of that place until death claimed him February 19th.
He passed from this life after a brief illness at the age of 61 years, 9 months and
27 days. He was married in 1885 to Elizabeth HUSTON. To this union was born one
daughter, Mrs. Maude REDDISH of Garnett, Kansas. His first wife died in 1889. He was
again married in 1893 to Miss Susan BURGESS, of Warrenton,Mo. Six children were born to
this union, two sons and four daughters, as follows: Mrs. Lizzie DIXON, Apex, Olan CARTER,
of Clarksville, Etta Mae of St. Louis, Ruth, Beatrice and Dudley of Winfield.
He is survived by a wife, two sons and five daughters, four grandchildren as
follows: Smith CARTER, Miss Fannie THURMAN, and Mrs. Sallie LEEK of Troy, Mrs. Alnedia
DAVIS of Hawk Point, Mrs. Tena GEAR and Mrs. Ida WILLIAMS of St. Louis.
Mr. CARTER was a member of the Foley Baptist Church. He was widely known and his
friends were numerous. He was a good citizen, loved and respected by all who knew him. Our
heartfelt sympathy goes to the widow and children. Trusting in God that we will all
meet him in the Great Beyond.
Note regarding clippings from the "Mattie Davis Martin Collection": Mattie Davis Martin (1875-1943) lived all of her life in Lincoln County, MO. She collected a large file of clippings of Lincoln County residents. The majority of the clippings were without citation, and kept stored in an old purse. Doris Martin Jablonski, beneficiary of the collection, has transcribed them for inclusion on our Lincoln County Heritage/Records Page.
