Obituary—Jas. W. CANNON

James William CANNON was born on March 12, 1864 on the old Cannon homestead near Foley, Mo., and departed this life on Feb. 12, 1940 at the age of 75 years, 11 months and 1 day. He suffered a paralytic stroke 7 years ago which left him with an afflicted arm and suffered his second stroke Sunday, February 11, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Louis FOSTER, where he and his wife had gone from church. It came upon him at the dinner table and he was not able to be moved to his home, although his mind remained clear to the end. His children were all at his bedside when he passed away.

He was one of eight children: Alonzo, Haunce, Jake, Theodore, and Evelyn preceded him in death. He was married to Margaret Darling TRESCOTT on Nov. 15, 1885 in the Bethany Methodist Church which her father, Enos TRESCOTT, had donated the ground for and built. Rev. Charles McCLURE officiated at the ceremony and a brother, Enos TRESCOTT and Isolda FISHER were the attendants. Most of their married life was spent on the old TRESCOTT homestead, where they lived at the time of his death.

To this union were born 7 children: Owen of St. Louis; Printha (Mrs. Louis FOSTER) Roger, Roxie (Mrs. Fount LUSSE); Ferman and J. W. of St. Louis; and Rachel (Mrs. Albert BECKEMEIER). There are 20 grandchildren and 2 grand sons-in-law; a brother, C. T. CANNON near Foley, Mo., and a sister Mrs. Mattie DODGE, of Spokane, Wash., besides a host of other relatives and friends to mourn his departure.

He united with New Salem Baptist Church in early manhood and later moved his membership to Foley Baptist Church where he was ordained a deacon in 1920 and remained so until his death. Many at Foley Church will long remember the sun shining on the silver of his hair as he sat in the corner on the bench in front of the stove.

His was the first link in the family circle to be broken. And such a happy circle it was. All the birthdays, anniversaries, and holidays were gala occasions, and their grandfather beamed with pride at each song, poem, reading, and musical number performed by his grand children.

Although he never tried to accumulate great worldly goods, he was rich in the love of his children whom he raised to be christians and good citizens. Divorce has never darkened the lives of any of this large family which is surely a credit to their home training and their belief in the teachings of God. When he appears before the bar of judgment to tell what he did with his talents, the Lord will surely say, "Well done, good and faithful servant".

The funeral was held at Foley Church, Feb. 15, with Rev. R. T. CAMPBELL of Bowling Green, and Rev. LYNN of New Salem officiating and Rev. and Mrs. BERNEKING of Troy rendered a beautiful duet.

Rev. BERNEKING had conducted a meeting at Foley Church in the fall and Mr. CANNON had enjoyed his preaching and the talents of his family in song, and we may be sure it would have pleased him greatly.

Many beautiful floral offerings were sent by friends and relatives.

He was laid to rest in the Bethany Cemetery with the members of Winfield I.O.O.F Lodge officiating at the grave. He has been a member of the Odd Fellow Lodge for 49 years. May God comfort the bereaved family. A Friend.
