Mrs. John CANNON Dies Thursday at Home in Elsberry – Clarence CANNON’s Mother, Resident of Elsberry Since Town was One Year Old

With the passing of Mrs. John Randolph CANNON, Elsberry gave up one of its pioneer citizens.

Mrs. CANNON passed away Thursday, September 11. Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. G. Elmo PURVIS at the Baptist Church and interment was in the Elsberry Cemetery Saturday afternoon.

A large crowd attended the last rites of this lady who spent a busy and full life in this community. Always interested in civic affairs, she was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, the W.C.T.U. the Modern Priscilla, the History Club and the P.E.O. Not only was she a member of these organizations, but a worker as well.

Perhaps the happiest hours of her life were spent in work for the Elsberry Baptist Church, of which she and her husband both were charter members. She was not only devoted to its ideals, but was active in every phase of its program of work. She faithfully lived her life not only as a member of this church, but in many positions of responsibility and service.

As Ida Glovina WHITESIDE, daughter of Edwin Ellis and Sarepta Ann WHITESIDE, Mrs. CANNON was born November 30, 1857. On April 4, 1878, she was married to John Randolph CANNON. She was the eldest of ten children, seven of whom survive her. She was the mother of three children, Clarence, who is serving his tenth term as representative in the lower house of Congress, the Ninth District of Missouri; Ruby, now Mrs. W. B. PEELER of Mexico, and Cecil W., deceased. She is also survived by five grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

The members of her family have the sympathy of everyone who had the opportunity of knowing her and the privilege of knowing her.
