John Harold (Hal) BARTON, well known radio and TV personality of Quincy, IL, died Sunday Jan. 11, 1987 in St. Mary's Hospital, Quincy, of congestive heart faiure. Services will be held at 1 p.m. today (Wednesday) at Duker & Haugh Funeral Home in Quincy with the Rev. Mark Behrendt, Presbyterian minister and Rev. Philbert Hoebing, Catholic priest, officiating. Interment will be in the Calvary Cemetery. Mr. BARTON was born May 27, 1911 in Kansas City, the son of the late Campbell and Ruby OMOHUNDRO BARTON. He was reared in the home of his mother and step-father, Mr. and Mrs. Emil ARKERS of Eolia who preceeded him in death. He was married April 19, 1941 to Anita WILMES of St. Louis who died Sept. 3, 1985.
BARTON served as master of ceremones for countless programs, fairs, contests, etc., through Missouri and Illinois, aways giving freely of his time. He is survived by a son, John Michael BARTON of the home; an uncle Winn OMOHUNDRO of St. Louis; and a number of cousins in Pike and Lincoln Counties. After graduating from Eolia High School, BARTON began his work in television and radio. He was a KHQA and WTAD announcer and broadcaster, started his career with WTAD in 1943 as a disc jockey on the progam "Syncopation Time". He was also associated with WTAD's Man on the Street for many years. When KHQA went on the air in 1953, BARTON became a television personality with the Hal BARTON Show. He left WTAD-KHQA-TV in 1974 after completing 31 years. Since then he has done free lance commercials, continued to write and produce, and was director of advertising and public relations at Gem City Savings and Loan in Quincy.
