Founding of
The Troy (now called Sand Run) Church
From the Silex Index, Special Church Edition, 6 October, 1902, p. 13.

Troy Church

(Now called Sand Run) Of the date of organization , we have not specific data. It was in existance sometime prior to 1828, as its name that year appears in the minutes of the Cuivre Association, and the strong probabilities are that this church was in the organization in 1822. From the name, it was evidently located at first in the village of Troy. The first house built was a small log one, out near Crooked Creek, two and a half miles south of town, in which meetings were held in the summer time; but in the winter the church met house to house. About 1836 or '37, they built a double log house further south on Sand Run, on or near the present site, five miles south of Troy. For a number of years, Thomas J. WRIGHT was pastor of this pioneer church.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rev. Thomas Jefferson WRIGHT a native of Clark County, Kentucky, settled in Lincoln county in 1830. He was a preacher of fine ability. In the split on missions, he identified himself with those who opposed what he called the "men-made institutions of the day." For years he was moderator of Cuivre - Siloam Association . I have heard my father say that Jefferson WRIGHT claimed the Lord called him to preach "To correct error. " His preaching, therefore was generally of a controversial character. He died September the 2nd 1867.

[Transcriber's Note: Do you suppose these Wrights were the family that Wright City was named for?? j.g.]
