The Murder of Captain George Washington Stonebraker
A story written by the late Ruth Tiller Ligon.  She tells of the death of George Washington STONEBRAKER who was md. to America HILTON the 8th child of Daniel & Elizabeth SIEBERT HILTON.

Captain George Washington STONEBRAKER was a Captain in the Hoe Militia during the Civil War. In 1865 he went to a sale on the VANCE SEAMAN FARM, south of Elsberry, Mo. This place is now owned by CHAMP GOODWOOD and known as "The GOODWOOD FARM (1974).   STONEBRAKER overheard a Mr. MATHIS say "There is that Capt. of the Militia and I'm going to shoot him". STONEBRAKER turned and grabbed the gun from his hand and threw it over the crowd and down the hill. MATHIS or his bother, ran for the gun, came back and shot STONEBRAKER in the back of the head. He fell to the ground dead. Mr. Beverly DUEY and Mr. John TILLER took him home but hurried on as they were afraid of being shot for helping him.

[Transcriber's Notes:  Another account I have about this is: America nee HILTON, STONEBRAKER, his wife and the children had to bury him as Tiller and Duey were afraid they would be shot for helping... he was buried in the STONEBRAKER FAMILY CEMETERY. He had a large stone I was told but it was rolled down the steep hill. The hill going up from Foley, Mo. on Hwy 79 was known as Heinaman Hill. The cemetery is on the right going north, was owned by Les Waggoner in 1974. I believe the Stonebraker Farm is now owned by a Mr. OLIVER. 6-9-2004 j.g.

note. George W. STONEBRAKER is the person who cut the white oak trees which marked the grave of the 3 McHUGH children who were massacred by BLACKHAWK'S Warriors. The HILTONS owned the property in later years and where the Indian Cem is. j.g.]
