Boys Skate Across the Mississippi River at Foley
The young folks at Foley, have been enjoying winter sports right here in Lincoln county of late. They have been skating on the Old Mississippi, from the Missouri side clear across to the bluffs on the Illinois side. The ice is from 12 to fifteen inches thick.
This may not happen again in years, but these young folks will be proud to say in years to come, "We once skated clear across the Mississippi River from Foley, Mo. to the Illinois side."
Among those who took this trip on their skates Sunday January 28, were: Hershel TILLER, Ray TURNBULL, Gregory SHARP, and Billy MEHS.
Who knows, these boys may read this item in the "News of Former Days" in the Free Press fifty years from now----Foley Correspondent.
[Transcriber's notes: yes, I remember reading it in the "News of Former Days" 50 years later, but was too busy at the time to check out the date..
As far as I know Ray Turnbull is the only one who is deceased. Mr. H. Tiller is in the Foley area, Mr. G. Sharp in Winfield and Mr. Mehs who is a grandson of Hattie L. Turnbull, lives in Idaho. ]
