Gillum Mill in Madison CO, Virginia Destroyed by Fire
The Elberry Democrat, Elsberry, MO, October 20, 1933, page 2.

Mrs. Lizzie STONE has been informed of the destruction by fire of the old Gillum Mill, historic landmark on the Rapidan River in Madison county, Virginia, in the vicinity of her old home. The mill was built in 1795 by William MADISON, brother of James MADISON, ex-president of the United States, and was bought in 1880 by the late T.O. GILLUM, a relative of Mrs. STONE. The local fire company, assisted by the Orange and Culpeper companies, prevented spread of the flames to nearby buildings, but the heavy foundation sills of the mill, hewn from heart lumber, as sound as when laid 139 years ago, continued to smoulder throughout the following day. In addition to its historic value as a landmark, the mill had served adjoining counties for so long that its destruction was looked upon by the entire community as a veritable calamity.

[Transcriber's Notes:  I am sending this article as the Gillum name is tied to many Lincoln co. families. I saw post cards from Miss Lizzie Stone when I was in Elsberry last spring visiting the soda shoppe. I think it is called the 4th Street Fountain.. I believe the Mrs. Stone from Elsberry mentioned in the article lived to be at least 100 years old. ]
