History of Troy High School
A public meeting of the citizens of Troy and vicinity was held at the opera House, March
20th, 1893 for the purpose of securing an educational institute in the City of Troy. A
corporation was formed and shares were sold. A. S. Buchanan being the first subscriber . A
constitution was adopted and ratified, and it was agreed that the institute should be
named Buchanan College in honor of the first and largest subscriber, A. S. Buchanan.
The college was first opened to students in 1893. The campus then extended from College
Street on the north and Buchanan Avenue on the east to Boone Street on the south and
Perkins Steet on the west.
On November 13, 1905, the Board of Curators of Buchanan College passed the resolution to
transfer to the Troy Village School District the entire College property, with all
improvements for and in the consideration of the sum of $5,373.46, under the condition
that the name of the institute should not be changed. The Troy District bought this
property for the purpose of maintaining a public High School.
The rapid growth of the school made an addition necessary, and on June 6th, 1928, the
citizens of the Troy School District voted a bond issue of $35,000 to erect a building
which is now under construction. This building is to be known as the Eugene and Henrietta
Bonfils High School, in recognition of a gift of $10,000 from Fred Bonfils, a former
Trojan. Mr. Bonfils' unselfishness is shown by his gift and the fact that he preferred
that the building be a memorial to his partents rather than himself. This sacrifice on the
part of the citizens of Troy, and Mr.Bonfils' gift is a direct challenge to future
students of Troy.
