Biography of Thomas M. Carter (1907)
No. 236 - Uncited clippings from the "Neva Murphy Hubbard Collection" of
Beth Rengers Talken, 1998.
The above is an excellent picture of one of Lincoln county's oldest and most highly
respected citizens. He was born in Virginia May 7, 1826, and will, therefore, be 81 years
old next Tuesday. He came, with his parents, to Missouri when 5 years old and they settled
in St. Charles county, where Col. CARTER grew to manhood. Just before he was 21 years old
he enlisted in the army for service in the war against Mexico for the Independence of
Texas. He served from 1847 to 1849 and was then given an honorable discharge and went to
California, where he remained about two years. He came back to Missouri but returned to
California with the late Frank PERKINS, taking a large drove of cattle. Returning to
Missouri in 1855, he was married in the same year to Miss Alabama HENRY and engaged in the
hotel business in Troy until the breaking out of the civil war, when he entered the
Confederate service, his first engagement being at the battle of Lexington. He served with
distinction through all the war, attaining to the rank of lieutenant-colonel. At the close
of the war he returned to Lincoln county and in 1868 settled on a farm in Clark township
and that vicinity has been his home to the present time. He was sheriff of this county
from 1873 to 1877 and made a most capable officer. Col. CARTER has always been an ardent
Democrat, taking an active interest in the affairs of his state and country. He has been a
constant reader and is, therefore, well posted as to the history of both state and nation.
He now makes his home with his son-in-law and daughter, John E. RICHARDS and wife, and the
Free Press hopes that many years may yet lie before him in which to enjoy the happiness
and comforts which now surround him.
