Driver Kills Boy, 4, Playing Near Home, Then Speeds Away. Wilbur REDMOND Fatally Hurt -
Auto Accelerated After Accident.
Wilbur REDMOND, 4-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. George F. REDMOND of 5958 Romaine place,
was killed nstantly at 3:45 p.m. yesterday when he was struck by a hit-and run driver in
the street in front of his home. The boy's father is a sports writer for the St. Louis
Star.
Police who investigated the case said they learned the boy was playing in the street and
was crossing toward his home when he was knocked to the pavement by a large blue sedan.
The driver of the car, which was going west rapidly, increased his speed and went on.
The boy was taken to a doctor's office where he was pronounced dead from a fractured skull
and internal injuries. The rear wheels of the car passed over his body.
Six Witnesses.
The police obtained the names of six witnesses to the accident. All agreed the driver,
after striking the boy, increased his speed and disappeared to the west. Some witnesses
said they believed they could identify the car. None obtained the license number.
The boy, somewhat large for his age, was a well-known figure in the neighborhood.
Bought New Clothes.
Monday afternoon his grandmother, Mrs. Margaret REDMOND of 4572 _outeau avenue, purchased
some new clothes for Wilbur and his three sisters and one brother to wear for the taking
of a group picture. Wilbur's attire consisted of a pair of long sailor trousers which he
wore in the neighborhood Monday night.
The survivors, besides the parents, are the sisters, Kathleen, 9; Patricia, 7, and
Marcella, 18 months old, and the brother, George, Jr., 6. The body was taken to the PEETZ
Brothers' Undertaking Company, 3029 Lafayette avenue. An inquest will be held today.
Note regarding clippings from the "Neva Murphy Hubbard Collection": Neva Murphy Hubbard (1886-1971) lived all of her life in Lincoln County, MO. She collected a large file of clippings of Lincoln County residents. The majority of the clippings were without citation. Beth Rengers Talken, beneficiary of the collection, has transcribed them for inclusion in our Lincoln County Heritage Records.
