Obituary for Bertha Mays Pollard (1887-1910)
No. 109 - Uncited clippings from the "Neva Murphy Hubbard Collection" of Beth Rengers Talken, 1998.

Silently and secretly, one by one, the loved ones are taken from our midst by an unseen hand to be transplanted on the unknown shore.

When the grim reaper, on last Wednesday, bore away the spirit of dear Bertha, he conveyed one of the sweetest burdens that ever passed over the sea.

When the sad intelligence that the spirit had fled from Bertha MAYS POLLARD, flashed over the vicinity, the entire community was veiled in a mist of sorrow and sadness.

Bertha MAYS, daughter of Mrs. Ruth MAYS, was born Feb. 8, 1887. When eight years of age her mother moved from Clinton, Mo., to the home of the late Miller WILSON where Bertha grew to womanhood. In December, 1907, she married Tony POLLARD, who with a 15-months-old baby survives her. For years the dreaded White Plague was forcing itself upon her. This spring she went to Oklahoma in search of relief, but failing she returned home where three weeks before her death she became bedfast, where she patiently awaited the end. She became reconciled to her fate and made necessary preparations for the end, which came with the rising of the sun June 29, 1910. A few days prior she called her mother to her bed and requested her to take her baby girl to raise as she could live no longer. On Sunday at her request she was baptized by Elder DAVIS into the Christian faith.

She leaves to mourn her departure her husband, baby, mother, Mrs. R.N. WILSON, and brother Walter, of Oklahoma, besides a host of friends.

The funeral was preached at her home by Eld. DAVIS, June 30, at 9 a.m., and the remains were followed by a throng of sorrowing friends to the MILLER burying ground, where three hours later they were placed beneath the sod. Bertha was a dear, sweet girl, only 23 years old, a general favorite among her friends who were all who knew her. She grew up among us and will be missed by all.
