Obituary for Sarah Nichols (1826-1912)
No. 102 - Uncited clippings from the "Neva Murphy Hubbard Collection" of Beth Rengers Talken, 1998.

Mrs. Sarah NICHOLS died at her home near Ethlyn last Friday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock primarily from the infirmities of old age, at the advanced age of 86 years and 4 months. Chesley NICHOLS, her husband, died about 40 years ago. She leaves 6 children, five of which were at the funeral, Matt of Ethlyn, J.C. of Springfield, Mrs. J.A. WILLIAMS of St. Louis and Mrs. A.E. TAYLOR and Mrs. Jos. S. MARTIN, both of Ethlyn, besides 18 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, four of the latter being children of Mr. and Mrs. J. Forrest JOHNSTON of Troy.

The deceased, was born near Auburn, June 6th., 1826; died Oct. 11th., 1912; being at the time of her death 86 years, 4 months and 5 days old. She was the daughter of William and Anna SITTON. In the year 1845 she was married to Chesley H. NICHOLS, who died March 15th, 1872. To this union, 10 children were born; 5 of these have gone on before and 5 survive her to mourn her loss. In 1872, sister NICHOLS united with the Highland Baptist chruch, of which she was a consistent member till the Lord called her home. 1872 was not the beginning of sister NICHOLS' Christian life, for she had been a Christian for a number of years, but it was at this time she transferred her membership to the Highland church. She had lived a widow 40 years, struggling with the hardships and adversities of life to maintain and bring up her family, and through [sic] of rather a frail constitution, she succeeded well, and left to her children-and her posterity-a heritage better than riches, a faithful, godly life. No one who knew her ever questioned her religion or her sincerity. Her friends were numbered by her acquaintances. At 11 a.m. Sunday, Oct.13th., 1912, a very large concourse of people gathered at the church to hear the funeral preached by her pastor, Rev. J.H. TERRILL, of Bowling Green, Mo., from Acts 26:8, after which the body was laid to rest in the cemetery near by to await the resurrection. "Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord form [sic] henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them." "And they shall have part in the first resurrection."

-Her pastor
