Obituary for William H. Murphy (1840-1932)

William H. MURPHY, 92 years old, died last Friday night at the home of his daughter,
Mrs. Harvey E. POWELL, __ West Elsberry, after a brief illness due to general infirmities
of his advanced years. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon in the Methodist church
at Moscow Mills, Rev. __ E. POOLE, pastor of Elsberry M. ___ church, officiating, and
burial was made in the old HUBBARD cemetery not far distant. Besides Mrs. POWELL there is
another daughter, Mrs. J.M. HUBBARD, of St. Louis.
William H. MURPHY was born ___ farm near Moscow Mills February 9, 1840, and died in
Elsberry May 13, 1932, making his exact age 92 years, 3 months and 4 days. He was married
January 25, 1882, to Miss Lelia HUBBARD, who died April 25, 1906. Of five children born to
them, Lillian, the eldest, died at the age of 16 years, Della died in 1915, and William,
the only son, died in 1920. After disposing of his farm twelve years ago, Mr. MURPHY
divided his time between the surviving daughters, Mary ( Mrs. POWELL), and Neva (Mrs.
HUBBARD) usually spending the winters with the latter in St. Louis. He was remarkably well
preserved for one of his years and might easily have passed for 75. He failed
perceptibly _____ strength during the last six months of his life, but was bedfast little
more than two weeks. A remarkable ___ of his life history is that he lived ___ score
years on the farm where he ____ born, and was buried there.
Five grandchildren, James and Bessie POWELL, of this city, and Elizabeth, Edna and Georgia
HUBBARD, of St. Louis, remain to cherish the memory of this venerable man.
Note regarding clippings from the "Neva Murphy Hubbard Collection": Neva Murphy Hubbard (1886-1971) lived all of her life in Lincoln County, MO. She collected a large file of clippings of Lincoln County residents. The majority of the clippings were without citation. Beth Rengers Talken, beneficiary of the collection, has transcribed them for inclusion in our Lincoln County Heritage Records.
